maps.google.com

has a great feature, 'search nearby'

Map the hotel (just type the name at the top), click search nearby and then type in whatever you want..,....tourist sites, restaurants etc. The Brooklyn Promenade has iconic views of the skyline. The Brooklyn Bridge Park is lovely. The transit museum is nearby. Walking around Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO is fun. You can also get to the Brooklyn Museum of Art easily by subway.

Smith Street, which isn't that far, is a great restaurant street.

Brooklyn Heights is the closest neighborhood. I wouldn't call it "fun" but it is beautiful. Walk to the Promenade which is along the river. Walk down Montague Street (the main drag), grab some food, then walk down the promenade (in the direction you see the bklyn bridge). Then walk down Columbia Heights down the steep hill and go to Brooklyn Bridge Park (on your left). Then walk into DUMBO down the cute cobblestone streets and do a little shopping :)
