Getting from JFK to BAM in Brooklyn - 2 hours?

Hi there,

In a couple of months I'll be heading to New York from Melbourne, Australia.

I will be stopping in L.A. where I will clear U.S. customs..

My flight to New York JFK will land at 5.05pm. I have tickets for a 7.30pm show at BAM Howard Gilman Opera House (30 Lafayette Ave) in Brooklyn.

What's the best way to get from JFK to BAM within this time frame? Am I dreaming to think I can get there in time?

Am yet to book accommodation. My ideal scenario would be to have enough time to check in, and dump my luggage. If not, I'm happy to go direct to the venue from the airport. What do people think is practical?

Welcome all feedback.. Many thanks.

Take Airtrain to Jamica, Transfer to LIRR Atlantic Termimal Bound trains. Its about 5-6 Blocks from Atlantic Terminal LIRR station to BAM. Just walk down Flatbush Ave

It would take about an hour. There is not time to drop off luggage, Just go

Agreed with the above. And if the fancy strikes you to take a cab - don't. It will take much longer.

If you are arriving on a Saturday or Sunday, there is very little Long Island Railroad service to Brooklyn, only once per half hour.

You could take the "Howard Beach" Airtrain, then the Manhattan-bound "A" to Utica Avenue, wait there for the "C" train on the opposite track of the same platform, which you take to "Lafayette Avenue". You are then next to the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

You might be tempted to get off at Nostrand to make the change, but the trains are on diffferent levels on Nostrand Avenue and you'd have to walk down a flight of stairs, so change at Utica Avenue for the "C" local.

If it's a weekday, it's 50-50 but I still think the subway is easier from Howard Beach than the LIRR from "Jamaica" station.

Go to MTA.info for a subway map. Also without knowing where your hotel is we can't tell you if you have time to check in. NYC is 40km x 35 km in area. JFK is at one end. BAM is 30 km away.

I would recommend a cab. You should have plenty of time.

Take a taxi - it's the only way you can be sure you will get there on time.

Brooklyn is a big place, cannot answer unless we know where you are going. If you are going to Starett City its alot cheaper than going to downtown Brooklyn

$2.50 to get in the cab, $2.50 per mile, $.50 every 1 minute of going less than 11 miles per hour. Go to Google maps or Mapquest, figure out where you are headed, get the number of miles, and do the arithmetic. Brooklyn is bigger than the City of St. Louis!
