Visiting Yellowstone & Glacier National Park in June

My husband and I are driving from N. Georgia to Yellowstone & then Glacier National Park. We plan on being gone close to 3 weeks. From what I've read the Sun Hwy. will probably be closed & it's supposed to be incredible . We chose early June as we didn't want to go when the kids were out of school as it will be very crowded. It's just my husband & I traveling, we are in our mid- late 60's but active & enjoy hiking. We were planning on staying 2 nights at Ol Faithful Snow Lodge & thought we should maybe stay a night at Mammoth Hot Springs or Roosevelt Lodge at the north then head up to Glacier & see Beartooth Hwy.

Are there any comments about visiting in June or suggestions of where to stay or do, routes to take, etc .

Your help is appreciated

Welcome, Tina!

Since you are planning a 4000 mile round-trip road trip, you might want to post on the Road Trips forum:

There are folks who have driven it to give personal advise, especially on your 3 week time frame.

From Roosevelt through the Lamar valley & then over the magnificently scenic Beartooth Hwy to Red Lodge is a great route if you have the time & there isn't a storm closure.

Early June is my favorite time in the Yellowstone since the bears tend to still be down at lower elevations.

The Going to the Sun Road won't open until at least June 21st, depending on how much snow they receive. It's opened as late as early July just a few years ago. But you may be able to drive part of it, but not all the way across. You can make the drive around the park via Highway 2.

Some places to stop would be the historic Izaak Walton Inn in Essex. Also stop in East Glacier Park in the Two Medicine Area of GNP- a section of the park most people never visit. Two Medicine has some very nice hiking trails too. Visit the park lodge in East Glacier Park.

You can see Glacier, but you can't see a lot of Glacier in June. It would be advisable to budget more days in Yellowstone that time of year.

You provided so great information. Thank you so much !! We wish winter would end so Sun Road & activities in GNP looked more likely.

Hello!

There was some great advice on visiting the Yellowstone area and that Beartooth HWY is incredible, there are also some great views id you head North from Yellowstone through the Swan Mountains and also up along Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater Lake West of the Mississippi! Once you get to Glacier there are plenty of options, even thought the Going to the Sun Road will most likely be closed, there are still a lot of wonderful options and us locals really enjoy this time of year here :)

Some suggestions for your time in Glacier:

West Glacier- Camas Rd. into Polebridge is really nice and there is an incredible Bakery out there as well as a very beautiful exclusive lake, Bowman Lake. There is also great small hikes in the area such as Avalanche lake out of the West side, about 4.5 miles round trip in an incredible Pacific Rain forest.

There are also some incredible Scenic and Whitewater Raft trips offered at this time of year and the River is the perfect way to see this area! Great Northern Raft and Great Northern Resort offer incredible Lodging in their cabins and/or Rafting trips in the morning and at night! We think you would really enjoy the Scenic afternoon ride with the riverside dinner. All of our meals are local, organic and specially cooked for you!

We also recommend getting over to the Two Medicine area of the park which is scenic and should be fully accessible by that time as well as the Many Glacier area...usually lots of wildlife spotting happening there!

Hope that helps! You will have an incredible time here in June!
