What's blooming at the end of May?

And where are the best spots to see it? We'll be in the Gatlinburg area May 21-27. I've only been in the fall and would love to see the lovely mountain flowers. We are able to do a moderate hike.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Here's a list from my Smokies Guide paper for the spring:

Serviceberry, fire cherry, silverbell, witch-hobble, fringed phacelia, bluets, trout-lily, spring-beauty, sweet white violet, Jack-in-the-pulpit, fire pink, passion-flower, Vasey's trillium, white wake robin, mountain laurel, and flame azalea.

Places to find these include Roaring Fork Motor Trail, Clingmans Dome Road, Cades Cove, and the Greenbrier area.

The elevation range of the Smokies (900 ft to 6,600 ft) makes it tough to assign a calendar date to a specific plant species blooming in the mountains. In general the plants flower earliest at the lower elevations and follow the seasonal warming process upward from the valleys to the highest elevations. In late May the mountain peaks will be the coolest and wettest habitat, getting a lot of moisture from clouds. I would recommend that you explore along the Clingman's Dome Road. Especially: take hikes along the Sugarland Mountain Trail and Fork Ridge Trail off the road.

Thanks so much for the replies.

Twohikers, are the trails you mention off the spur road that goes up to Clingman's Dome off the Newfound Gap road? We've never done any hiking up there other than up to the tower.

Thanks again,

Jennifer
