My suggestion would be the Townsend area - lots of information on that area on this site.

OR.....we have discovered the Tellico Plains area. Just south of the park. There is no information on this site about the area, but it is gorgeous, and no crowds. I suppose if you Google it you can find some info.

It is a small town, but the few restaurants we ate at were all good, and there are a few places in the area to stay. There is a new lodge that looks nice.

You might want to look into the North Carolina side of the Smokies. Smoky Bob might chime in with some suggestions about the area since that's where he lives.

The Nantahala Area is perhaps ideal for the what you are seeking. Nantahala is west of Bryson City and you have the river of said name and Lake Nantahala as well with places to stay.

There are some properties near Lake Fontana in Bryson City or perhaps the Stecoah Valley area which is outside of Bryson City towards Robbinsville.

Swain and Graham Counties are the region you might want to seek out. I think part of Lake Nantahala is in Cherokee County as well. www.greatsmokies.com would have a number of places to check out for your trip planning.

I agree with Smoky Bob on the Nantahala area. My fiance and I visited there with friends several years ago and absolutely loved it. It is a perfect area for the outdoor enthusiast. We went rafting at the Nantahala Outdoor Center, http://www.noc.com/ , and we rode the Great Smoky Mountain Railway too, http://www.gsmr.com/ . Rafting was so much fun on the Nantahala River and you can pick whether you want to go in a kayak or raft, guided or unguided. There are so many rivers to pick from with varying skill levels. Just make sure to call ahead for reservations. Fontana Lake looks awesome for fishing and I believe you can rent pontoon boats and you can even rent houseboats if you want to spend that much. I recommend Watershed cabin rentals, http://www.watershedcabins.com/ if you're looking for a cabin. We love the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area, but if your looking for outdoor adventure, Nantahala is a great choice.
