Practically everyone that comes to the area knows that using the backroads to get around is by far the best way to avoid the heavy traffic and make their visit far less stressful. However very very few of them actually know the backroads locals use and don't take the time to learn them. Veterans is one many seem to think they know about but almost no one uses it beyond the Dollywood turn off. That street alone will save you tons of time if you fully utilize it. There are many more. Buy a good quality local county map when you arrive and spend a half hour studying it. Use a highlighter to mark the roads that look like they could get you where you want to go without using the main strip. Then try some of them. The time you save will be returned 10 fold in time saved seating in heavy traffic.

Baskins Creek Falls is a little known hike to a beautiful water fall.

If you can make yourself slow down and try it the cities trolley system on a good weather day is so much more relaxing to use than driving. It won't work for every place you visit here but it is a fun and inexpensive way to get aroud to some key areas like Dollywood, the Old Mill, the outlet malls and many of the hotels and campgrounds around Pigeon Forge. It's also a great way to get between Pigeon Forge and Gatlinbury but taking one cities trolley to the Gatlinburg visitors center where you catch those leading to the other city. The driver in the family will especially enjoy the rides.

I'll stop at these for now.
