Touring Fort Portal

Last week me and my girl friend were in Fort Portal with the intention of going Chimp trekking in Kibaale before heading off to Queen Elizabeth immediately afterwards. We were quite taken by surprise by the beauty of the surrounding areas and small neat town and decided to stay an extra day or two to sightsee a bit more of the place so we went out on a walk through town to see if we could find any local tour providers. We found three but it is Amazing Uganda Tours near the town library that we zeroed in and It is a choice we didn’t regret.

Their services exactly suited our needs as they have no packaged tours but all arrangements are customized to suit the client with them acting merely as tour advisors with suggestions of what might interest you. Being ultra-budget travelers we found their prices extremely favorable and their advice helpful. Their services are specialized for regional tour activities and we had a great time with them hiking the lower rwenzoris, visiting cocoa plantations near semliki, boating on the crater lakes and giving us a free guide to go with us to Kibaale for which we’d already independently bought permits and the swamp walk thereafter.

I’d definitely recommend any one who is interested in seeing the beautiful Fort Portal area to stop by their places. They can be reached on the street near the town library or telephone +256772-993678 or email safari@amazinguganda.com or the website at www.amazinguganda.com

I am sure you will be glad you did.

Thanks James for your post.

Would be interested to know where you stayed in Fort, and where else you visited in Uganda?

Hello Open road spirits!

We are travelling independently as a group of three and currently in Fort Portal proceeding later to Queen Elizabeth and would like to share with you our experiences in this small beautiful town at the foot of the Ruwenzori mountains. We were taken by the scenery right from the rolling lush landscape of the tea plantations as one enters town to the cleanliness and peacefulness of the town center. It is while having lunch upon arrival on Sunday and trying to figure out what next that we came upon James’ post about his time in Fort Portal. We usually prefer wherever possible to do things on our own, but out of curiosity decided to reach out to Amazing Uganda Tours figuring we had nothing to lose by inquiring about their services.

You can imagine our surprise when their contact, David asked us as to our location and in a short while came over to the restaurant, welcomed us to his town, chatted us about our plan, gave us a brief history of the area, general tips about facilities and basically charmed us with his warmth and local knowledge. Having had no prior accommodation booking, he recommended to us a small hotel called Atlantica which is found in the neighborhood of Mountains of the Moon hotel. Piqued, he offered to take us there which we readily agreed to. When we got there he promptly haggled with management succeeding in bringing down the rate for us from 90.000 to an impressive 60.000 citing our being his “clients” and our “big” number (of 3!) From this point on we knew we were in for an adventure and decided to contract his services.

He has a staff of two guides offering walking, boda boda , chauffeured tours and guide services. We opted for the latter. We have so far been to Bigodi for the Primate Swamp walk, walked the crater lakes from Rweteera trading center via the stunning views from Top of the World, through the villages to L.Nkuruba camp where we really got up close with the beautiful Columbus monkeys.

Today we have just come back from visiting the caves and thereafter we continued on to do some hike climbing in the rwenzori foothills where we have passed through homestead villages, coffee and banana plantations to stunning views stretching all the way to Congo. We also visited some pristine waterfalls in the mountains that only the locals seem to know of so for a minute we felt the awe of being its “discoverers” . on the way back down we also walked on part of the ancient path trails the local tribes have been using since time immemorial to access the other side of the mountain which is however almost 90 kms by road.

Tomorrow we head to the semliki for the hot springs and nature walk. As we sit here at Dutchess resting our legs, I’d definitely say Fort Portal is good for more than just a single day of chimp trekking. It is a place worth exploring if you have a flexible schedule (always the best way to travel!) and if you do, definitely seek out David and his team for value for your time and penny. They can be reached on 256-772-993-678 and amazinguganda@yahoo.com. Great travelling all ye restless souls!

thanks Greg,I have always thought that Fort Portal is an undiscovered gem of Uganda and the whole area deserves a lot more than just a stopover on the way to somewhere else...and it seems that we all have our favorite tours agency there, so we should all be well taken care of!
