Attending a Wedding in October

We will be attending a wedding in October. We will be in Greensboro for 4 nights. 2 of the nights will be for the Wedding and we will have 2 nights free plus our days will be on our own. What would you suggest to do? Are there any day trips that we should do? We will be flying into Greensboro and renting a car. What will the weather be like?

October is about the nicest month, weather-wise, to visit central NC. Especially early October...expect highs in the mid to upper 60s.

If you're willing to drive a little bit, in Asheboro, about 30-40 min south of Greensboro, is the North Carolina Zoological Park. That's a great time of year to go...after the summer crowds, but still warm enough to see everything. Unlike most "city zoos", our state zoo is a large natural habitat zoo, hundreds of acres big. You can definitely spend an entire day there and just barely see all they got. (check out nczoo.org for info).

If you like Historic stuff, the Guilford Courthouse Revolutionary War Battlefield is note-worthy.

The leaves should be changing, the weather will probably be chilly but nice days and cool nights. It would be a great time to drive an hour north and tour the Blue Ridge Parkway or a little closer is Pilot Mountain State Park. Both should be beautiful in October. ils.unc.edu/parkproject/visit/pimo/home.html

For historical and something closer, try Old Salem in Winston-Salem.

If you like NASCAR, go to the RCR museum in Welcome, NC, just south of Winston-Salem. www.rcrracing.com

There are several winery's in the area also. www.ncwine.org.

Thanks. All were good suggestions. We don't mind driving but just for day trips. Thought about the fall colors but didn't know if we needed to drive to see it or will it be visable from where we are. Thanks again!

The fall colors will be visible from everywhere but the view from the top of the mountain looking across the top of the trees is a gorgeous sight. I would highly recommend, since you have the time and don't mind a drive, Pilot Mountain. Take I-40 west to 52N. In less than an hour, you'll see Pilot Mountain State Park right off the highway . It will be worth the drive.

If you don't get your fill of color there, continue up 52N to find the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Have fun and Good Luck to the new couple.
