The incident yesterday was due to water seeping in through the area of the engine/gland bush . The boat was moored immediately to the bank and passengers were moved out .It is also said that the boat was carrying excess people on board.

Despite recurring boat tragedies, the safety level of the boats operating in the state continues to be in a pitiable condition- says the Indian express report dated 24 April 2012

The reports states that 'Around 1,000 inland vessels, including houseboats and ferry boats , ware now plying in the state. But only less than 50 of them have qualified the stability test.

More than 9,00 boats have been registered in Alappuzha alone. The application form for registration of boats clearly states that all boats must be put to stability test within 90 days of the receipt of registration certificate. But many boats have not obtained the stability test certificate in time. Only around 50 boats have obtained the certificate even after a year of introduction of the stability test."

‘See Kuttanad’ project gets good response'

The passenger - tourist boat service operating under the ‘See Kuttanad’ project of the State Water Transport Department is getting a good response from tourists and other passengers a month after it began services.

The department was getting enquiries about the new service. Online enquiries were also received at the department’s website. The 90-seater boat has a mini-eatery, video facility and lower and upper deck seating arrangements. The ticket rate for tourists, for whom the upper deck is reserved, is Rs.25 per person. The rate for the lower deck is Rs.10 per passenger.

this is not the houseboat .it is a steel boat and a service boat ( upper deck for tourist) operated by the state water transport department . please check the link in the first post here , you have a picture of it

it starts from the boat jetty at the centre of town, just near to the district tourism promotion council office ( DTPC)
