Houseboat day trip - book in advance?

Hi! We are staying for 2 nights at Marari Beach Resort in July this year, so have 1 full day near Alleppey. We are hoping to book a 4 or 6 hour backwaters trip for the 4 of us, preferably on a house boat because they look so beautiful.

Do we need to book a trip in advance, or can we turn up on the day and find a boat? Will July be busy?

Where do the boats go from?

Thanks

Jen

DON'T book in advance, you will pay more and don't know what you will get. Just turn up, check out several companies and boats and bargain...July is not busy

Hi jen

july will be having monsoon and you can experuance monsoon tourism thrill.since its not a peak season for house boats, its not required to prebook one in advance.

you can select either prepaid booking counter of ktdc near alapuzha finshing point to book your house boat or you may directly negotiate with house boat owners ,where they will be parking there house boats near finishing point.you may check the house boats and select the one that suites you. There are maonly 2 category of house boat-standard which operates ac from 9pm to 6 pm and premium category which runs ac throughout journey and you may select one.usually houseboats has 2 normal trip conducted.one is day trip which is usually from 9 am to 6 pm and other is overnight stay which is from 12 noon to 9 am on next day.if you are not comfortable with these two and needs a few hour trip, you may negotiate with house boat providers for hourly rates.some can provide that too.enjoy your trip

Hi MagicFlyingBoots,

There are 4-5 hours exclusive houseboat day cruises (say,12 p.m. to 4 pm) available in Alleppey/Kumarakom with welcome drink, lunch( Non- Vegetarian/ Vegetarian) and tea/snacks in the evening on board.

The cruise can be arranged exclusively for your family. Houseboat staff will be there to serve you.You can enjoy fishing using traditional fishing rod on board.

Additional food menu such as sea food, prawns, etc, are also available, if you prefer.

I suggest you to prebook the houseboat from a reputed operator so as to ensure the best quality one, even though there will not be so much rush in July.

Cheers,

Arun

July is off season. So, the prices are down. If you look for the best competitive prices, you can arrive at the boat landing around 10.00 AM, look at the boats one by one and bargain the prices. But, I recommend booking a good boat from a reputed firm with good staff to avoid unwelcome surprises.

A houseboat ride is a joy when you find a good houseboat, great staff, an excellent cuisine and a clear sky. July is not a good time to be traveling on a houseboat in Kerala. The monsoons would be in and houseboats rarely venture out in the backwaters. Yes, a few houseboats do venture out but the first hint of a strong breeze and they would anchor on the shore. Try to book in advance with a good and reputed firm and DO NOT go through an intermediary. This way you get good prices and committed service. You have options from a single bedroom to multiple bedroom houseboats with upper decks. Decide on your requirements (a single bedroom with a good lounge should be great for a day trip) and specify your meal plan.

Book for a boarding at 10.00 in the morning which would enable you to have a great lunch (veg or non veg) and enjoy the scenic beauty of Kerala.
