Is it okay to rent house near Kerobokan Jail?

Hello,

We're searching for a house for a two months and have found a really nice place at Jalan Mertanadi, it's well designed, all new and clean, and seems to be well guarded with separate gate from the street. Also we like this location, because it's close to center of Kuta and pretty close in a way to Canngu and we can drive to different surf spots by bikes in minutes.

But! I'm really concerned about how close is Kerobokan Prison to our possible house. It's super close! Here is the screenshot of map where the house is located.

So, I would really appreciate for any advices, maybe somebody is living at this area. I know that Kerobokan Prison is notorious known like Hotel K, and there was some problems with prisoner's riot in 2012. What can you say, guys? I really like the place, but that prison is really scaring me.

Thanks in advance, guys.

If I were going to break out of prison I would want to get away as fast as possible - and I cant remember hearing of any break outs . I'm sure you will be fine and they dont riot very often.

I would say that your biggest fear should be the Australian Media pack that will descend on the place if something dramatic happens with an Aussie inmates or Schappelle gets sent back for breaking the conditions of her parole.

You would have to be very, very unlucky to have any riots or uproar in the 2 months that you will be there given how rarely there is ever any trouble that affects the outside world.

A friend of mine had a villa on Jalan Mertanadi and I have stayed there, on my own, and always felt safe. It is a great spot with a few minimarts on the st, a great market on Pettingret rd where you can grab fruit and veg or cheap nasi goreng I even walked to poppies lane via the beach. The prison being so close wasn't an issue for me and I always felt safe if it ticks all the boxes don't let the prison being so close scare you as you will find the area is close to the tourist area but also it is a great area to have as a base to also explore other areas :)

Hi Sergei, my family have a house in that area and being too close to the prison is really not an issue unless something is happening at the prison. Riots don't happen very often at all and when they do it is the Security Forces storming the area around the prison that brings traffic to a stand still. On average 6 -8 prisoners escape a year and you will hardly even know about it if it should happen while you are there. Your security guard will make you aware of it so you can be vigilant. Believe it or not an escapee in Bali usually heads to his home where the police are waiting for him. One year 172 prisoners escaped at the same time but that is a rarity and will probably never happen again.

Staying in that area does not suit me personally but I would not hesitate to stay there if it did suit. Don't let the prison put you off but perhaps gives a bit of thought to the traffic around there.

Thanks a lot for your comments, guys. Yea, I've heard about mass escape, as I know it was at 1998 or 1999.

I've got another question, are there some sirens, buzzers or alarms at the morning or evening in casual days at prison? I mean, does any noises come from the prison or it's pretty quiet?

Anyway thanks, I guess it should be okay place for us, despite the jail.

There are no alarms or sirens that I know of. But they do announcements during visiting hours. Quite loud when you're there, but It doesn't go on forever and the announcements could possibly be cancelled out by the traffic noise :-)

I wouldn't hesitate to stay in the area. As said before, don't let the proximity of the prison put you off.
