Bali Rattan handbags or homewares

Hello

In July, on a day trip, I purchased a medium size trinket basket and a sewing box made from rattan from a market stall in Ubud. They sold a variety of products made from the same material e.g handbags, fruit baskets, platters etc. There were a few stalls at the market that were selling these style of products. I didn't see these crafts again in the markets around Kuta / Legion where I was staying.

I am returning to Legion in three weeks and I am wondering if anyone has seen any stalls or shops that sell similar in Kuta / Legion area as I would like to purchase again.

Many thanks, Wendy.

Go for a walk along Jl Legian from Legain towards Kuta, walk down Jl Singosari (Jl Bakungsari) and Jl Pantai Kuta.

In the other direction along Jl Seminyak.

You should find them in retail shops etc along Jl Legian.

Half day trip/day trip to Sukawati, Sukawati & Guwang markets.

There is an open air handicraft centre on Jl Kartika Plaza (Wake Bali)

If it is the very fine weave like the better quality placemats, there is a little glass fronted shop on Jl Raya Seminyak same side as Made's Warung heading towards jl Basangkasa. It specialises in woven goods, it has been there for years, a bit cheaper than some I saw in Ubud. It is very close to Cafe Moka.

It sounds like you might actually be looking for the ata grass handicrafts, rather than rattan (rotan) When you talk to vendors, ask to see the ata products. The other baskets are from Lombok.

The larger mats and bags are often from Kallimantan.

Does anyone know which town in east Bali makes these bags? And where would be the cheapest place to buy these wholesale without the middle man.

Hi there,

I Was on my vacation inn bali on the beginning of Oct.

The cheapest I bought 2 small round rattan bags in Ubud, 25 EUR both, which I consider cheap. Less of the choice was in Seminyak and Kuta, so when you catch it, you buy it :)
