Outside Jayakarta is it safe surfing for beginner ??

Am off to Bali in October just myself and 13yold he has surfed out front of KP last year but his surf savvy dad was with us. Am abit concerned re rips tides etc just to let him go for it. Off course my son tells me he will be fine. Anyone any hints or where not to surf out front there??

You must be vigilant and watch the rips and adhere to the flags. There are unfortunately many drownings in this beach strip. I would not let him go out without someone experienced myself.

yes totally agree...we could never say it would be safe , how do we know this.

What we do know is that there are many drownings on the beaches along there as linda says and it is also very dirty depending on time of year.

maybe the best person to answer your question would be his surf savvy dad.

all comes down to how much experience he has swimming in the surf and what the conditions at the time are.you could always pay one of the locals to surf with him and keep an eye on him.please dont let him surf in the flags though

Hi,

I've stayed at Jayakarta a couple of times and surfed that stretch many times.

It depends on how big it gets.....over 3 foot it can get very powerful...it is deceptive. It can be a heavy wave.

I've seen experienced surfers get held under for longer then you would expect at a similar sized surf in Oz.

And yes there are drownings there every year.

How experienced/capable is he? How well does he surf? Is he on a surfboard or body board?

I'd be cautious if it's over 2-3 foot and he's not a very capable surfer.

Thanks Phantom He will be taking his surfboard and only going out if its small. Last year he did get caught in a rip out there so knows the dangers. I will be keeping a very close eye on him

Frillneck, a 13 year old will say they know the dangers, but he is just a kid. Don't let him surf without someone experienced. Keeping an eye on him will not help if he does get into another rip.

there is a flag area just in front of jayakarta. on small days the surf is fine. the banks at the moment are straight so the chances of getting out the back are slim.

as far as safety, he has been there before and knows the wave. he will be fine and will make sensible judgement if it is too big, rough, etc. trust him to make the right decisions.

he is there to surf so may as well encourage than worry. ask him on the days he goes out his opinion of the surf, conditions, crowds, etc. he'll appreciate someone to discuss it with.

I suggest you strike a deal with one of the beach boys to go out with him. Tell them he doesn't need a lesson just an escort and they will usually give a cheaper price than for teaching because they love being out there anyway. They also know the tides and rips like the back of their hands. Outside of these times just be a meany and say no.

I saw a little Aussie boy of about 11 nearly drown in Kuta in July due to his Mum and uncle's total lack of any idea of the danger. They let him go surfing one afternoon with an elder brother who looked about 13 but the little one got swept out and swallowed a lot of water. His mum looked out and in a half soaked way said to the uncle "Do you thik he's OK?" the uncle was sure that he would be fine but Mum strolled down to look and could plainly see that he wasn't alright so a couple of local lads went out with boards and got him. His big brother was distraught because he had been trying to reach him but couldn't and kept seeing him going under. The little one was green in the face and throwing up. How could they have made the older one responsible for him? Didn't seem like bad people just ignorant of the danger.
