Afternoon/evening in Nuwara Eliya

Hi all

We have 2 nights in Nuwara Eliya on our Sri Lankan tour in late October, with an afternoon + evening free there. We will have visited a tea plantation, St Clair & Devon Falls, & had a city tour.

What can you recommend for our free afternoon/evening? A hike of some sort would be ideal - is it worth going to Horton Plains for the afternoon?

Thank you in advance!

At Horton Plains they stop letting people in at 3 pm. A better option is to visit Moon Plains and the Mini World's End which is just outside the town. Or take trip up to the summit of Pidurutalagala which is the highest point in the island. Both these trips make sense only if the weather is good. The other thing to do is to visit Haggala gardens. Unfortunately there won't be that many blooms in October there.

The average sliding 31-day rainfall during October in Nuwara Eliya is very rapidly increasing. Therefore your rip plan depends on weather totally.

Usually the Horton Plains tours start before the crack of dawn in order to avoid the clouds that roll in after lunch, and the morning is the best time to spot wildlife. You could take a walk round the lake, boat on the lake, climb Single Tree Hill for a 360 degree view of the area, trip to Seetha Temple

Have a High Tea at The Grand Hotel from 3.30 pm and wander around the gardens there.$A15

Do the walk to Mini Worlds End.

Do a tour of The old British hotel for 100 rupiah(can't remember it's name.)

Wander in the botanical gardens.

Horton plains is better early in the morning but still ok if you can get there before closing . It's a 9 km walk if you do a round trip.

High tea at the Grand hotel is lovely and so is just wandering in one of the outlying villages

Thanks everyone. Looks like closer to town is the go, and very weather-dependent (not looking good at this stage!). High tea definitely a must.....
