galle to nuwara eliya

I am spending some time in unawatuna for the galle test match in march. After the cricket I am looking at travelling up to nuwara eliya to climb adams peak before heading onto kandy.

How would I get from the galle area up to nuwara eliya?

Also, is it possible to base your self in nuwara eliya to climb adams peak?

Anyones help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

James

Hi James,

1] No Eliya is hours away. Closest big town is Hatton but still 90 mins from the mountain, Dalhousie is the village at the start of the path.

2] Galle-Hatton: takes 2 buses at least. First option to explore, quickest but takes 2 transfers:

* E01 to Kottawa (has limited capacity but lightning fast for SL standards, 75 mins)

* 122 or the like Kottawa-Avissawella, 1 hour

* Transfer to Hatton-Eliya long distance service here (2 more hours at least)

(And finally a bus Hatton-Dalhousie...)

So together 5.25 hours, assuming brief transfer times.

More simple option, but takes longer despite fewer transfers:

* Normal AC bus to Colombo Fort/Pettah, 3 hours

* Eliya long distance service from there, upto Hatton. 4 hours.

Together 7 hours.

If you still want Eliya: 90 mins beyond Hatton on same bus service. Also reachable through the mountain route, Galle-Hambantota-Ella, but that takes longer.

All the best,

Colombo-Hatton (bus # 16) passes through Avissawella.

Colombo-Nuwara Eliya (bus # 79) goes via Peradeniya and Gampola.

I am not aware of any buses from Colombo to Nuwara Eliya via Hatton.

Appreciate such a quick response.

It looked from the map that it could be a long journey.

What would be the rough cost of the bus travel?

Would it be possible to organise a transfer by car or would that be an expensive option?

Thanks

Hi again James,

Bus together maybe Rs 600, quite cheap. Car Rs 15,000 or so, but takes less time (using Expressway maybe 4 hours altogether to Hatton).

Thanks hans, love the speed of the response. That might get a bit long before our intended trek up adams peak. Would you recommend an alternative. Perhaps an airtaxi to kandy and a drive down? Do airtaxis go from galle to kandy

Adams Peak (season starts 27 December) is approx. 2-2.5 hours drive from Nuwara Eliya.

The drive from Adams Peak from Galle is approx. 5 hours.

The future of the air taxis is still uncertain. There were never air taxis from Galle to Kandy.

Hi can you recommend a taxi service from Galle to Nuwara Eliya. Being quoted US160 by guest house in Galle that seems really expensive

I'm afraid it's not that far off the fair price. Distance is 250-300 km and the going rate is Rs 70-75/km, plus upto Rs 500 Expressway toll depending on the chosen route. But always worth trying in Galle to get a lower price by asking around.
