HELP! where to stay- in or out of the city? FULL EXPERIENCE

So people have recommended the French Quarter for staying. We are staying 3 nights- but it is quite pricey. Is it worth it to stay in the French Quarter? Or is there an area/suburb... somewhere else we could stay and drive in to save money? I guess I can afford it, but I want it to be worth it. I have to consider the hotel and the parking- for 3 nights- which is around $200-$300 a night plus the parking (around 30). Does anyone say that we need to stay in town for the full experience? We probably will not be back.. we like to try new areas. So if to get the full feel and to walk everywhere and stay in a "local" hotel, then I am willing to pay. If I am going to stay in a Hilton, with $30 bucks a day, when I could stay about 15 mins away at a hampton/hilton etc with free parking and then drive into the city everyday and pay to park for the day.. that might be worth it. We will have dogs with us.. so the ease of getting to the hotel to let them out, bring them with us sometimes, but not all the time, is something to consider as well.

What does everyone think?

I see from your previous post you are planning to come in April which is a very busy month for events in New Orleans. Almost every weekend has a major event which drives up the hotel costs. The hotel prices drop significantly in June when the convention and the major event season ends. My next trip is planned the weekend of June 12, 13, 14 and there are some great hotel deals and parking deals that weekend. I often check hotel prices on bookit.com and expedia. The weekend before I arrive prices are much higher due to a convention. Hope this helps.

Since you asked:

I would leave the dogs at home. If that's just not possible, then I would try to book a less-expensive French Quarter hotel like the Chateau, Provincial or Le Richelieu. I have no idea if they are pet-friendly but I suspect you'll get by for far less than $200 a night. Ditto for many B&Bs near the French Quarter. You'll just need to check pet-friendliness.

New Orleans is a notoriously driver-unfriendly city. I don't recommend it unless you have to. It won't ruin your trip to drive, of course, but many people from "new" cities just aren't used to the old narrow streets, one-ways, etc. For this reason, I always recommend staying downtown!

Also, try looking at hotels in the Warehouse District, which is walking distance to the French Quarter. Harrah's Casino offers free parking to those who play at least 30 minutes inside the casino (slots count!), so you could save on parking that way!

April is a busy month with the Crescent City Classic Race, French Quarter Fest and Jazz Fest. For that reason, hotel prices are up.

Still, don't rent a car!! Take a cab (fixed rate) from the airport and then walk/streetcar/cab everything else. Look into the places just on the other side of Canal St., such as the La Quinta on Camp, I think. Or International House. In the Warehouse District there are many options, such as Marriot Courtyard Inn, Embassy Suites and more. Try the Best Western on Poydras St. or look for boutique hotels in the area of the CBD/Warehouse District.

Alternately, you could look at staying in a B&B in the Marigny. Or if you stay in the Lower Garden District or Garden District, there are a handful of hotels on St. Charles Ave., along the street car route - Best Western, Quality Inn, Hampton Inn, and Garden District Hotel.

Hmm, I forgot about the dogs....you really should look into the Loew's, which is pricey, but pet-friendly. And, try a B&B, there are so many in town and so many websites to look at.

Good luck!

I think the Hilton Riverside allows dogs, and it's on the streetcar line.

In any case, I would definitely stay in the French Quarter/downtown area, since it's so walkable. You miss out so much by staying in the suburbs, and it's a major hassle to come back and forth and try to park everyday.

With such a short time to visit, it is absolutely worth staying in the French Quarter. Le Richelieu is probably a good choice as they have free parking and are not terribly expensive. (Trip Advisor lists $169 per night as an average.) Let's say you could stay for $20 or $30 less per night outside the city. You would have to pay to park when you would drive into town and if you come in once during the day and once for dinner, you would eliminate a lot of the savings right there. But even if the total you would save would be $20 for each of three nights, that's a total of $60 when you're not planning on ever going back to New Orleans????!

try http://www.pet-friendly-hotels-net/pet-friendly-hotels-louisiana.html

In the past some of the pet friendly places were Holiday Inn FQ, Omni Royal, Royal Sonesta, Sheraton, W on Poydras and in FQ, Windsor Court, Drury Inn.
