Mardi Gras in Las Vegas?

In this week's issue of Us Weekly I found an article saying that many celebrities (including Britney Spears) are going to try to bring Mardi Gras 2006 to Las Vegas. They are planning to

"formally approach Mayor Ray Nagin about hosting Mardi Gras and turning it into a giant philanthropic event benefiting Hurricane Katrina victims."--Us Weekly

I'm not sure if this has been posted before! but What do you all think?

The sentiment is great.....help revive New Orleans. But the original Mardi Gras events will always be in New Orleans, Mobile, and Mamou!!!!! If I can get a hotel room, I would prefer NO to LA any day.

Oops. Las Vegas (LV), not LA.

Sorry.

That's probably the worst idea I've heard in years.

If Las Vegas wants to hold a Mardi Gras, they can do so. Many cities do. I'd rather cancel ours for a year than have Rex roll the Strip. By the way, this will NEVER happen as most New Orleans krewes would absolutely be aghast at this idea.

I suspect several krewes will skip 2006 but most will go on. In 2007, we'll see if there's a shake-out or not. A smaller New Orleans probably means a smaller Carnival, which isn't necessarily bad. Many folks think it taxes N.O. resources to host 36 parades each year.

The philanthropic thought is nice, however, I completely agree with CajunWave. Mardi Gras is NOT Mardi Gras ANYWHERE else in the world, period. All indications are that Mardi Gras 2006 WILL most definitely take place here at home where it always has been and always will be in New Orleans.

I would have to agree.

I just wonder if it's to help or to try to cash in on the millions that would normally go to NO. I already see some places trying to fill the vacuum created by the loss of the Mississippi Casinos.

I would actually expect that Mardi Gras 2006 would be something special in NO, you know like a "We're Back!" party.

I haven't visited NO for Mardi Gras, but did go to Las Vegas last year for a short visit and although it was OK to use as a base to see the Grand Canyon, I wouldn't go agan..it's not my type of place as it's the only place I've ever visited that I never mingled with locals. The main thing I loved about NO was the people, and without a core of fantastic locals, nowhere has it for me I'm afraid. I don't mean to denegrate LV as I know that tons of people love it, it's just my opinion.

I have never been to Mardi Gras, but I must say that I do not feel a town like Las Vegas is good for this event. Where would they have the parades? On the strip? Where would all that traffic go??

I think the government should get off their butts and work hard so parts of NO are ready for Mardi Gras.

In case you haven't seen the news, Blain Kern's Mardi Gras World and the floats he builds there escaped with no damage. There might be some compression of parades and maybe even doubling up of parades, but I believe there will be a Mardi Gras. It can certainly happen on the West Bank, Metairie and Uptown and those traditional routes are dry.

Never happen. And really, the whole idea seems to be a good indicator how much these "celebs" really know about NOLA... it's a completely hideous idea.

Vegas (don't get me wrong), is a funtastic place... a hub for fun and excitement, on a global scale. But Mardi Gras in Vegas!?... Mardi Gras is SO much more than these folks come close to realizing. Vegas is a city of plastic facades and pseudo-everything... NOLA is real, and Mardi Gras is steeped in tradition and spirituality, and yes fun too... but Vegas would only cheapen and take away from what Mardi Gras really is... a Family event, for everyone.
