What can I combine with a plantation tour (day with a car)

Hi I would like to visit a plantation while in NO. Which one would

you recommend? Also, that day , we plan to rent a car( probably

the only day that we will rent a car), what would you combine

with the plantation visit to maximize the use of the car .

I would also like recommendation for restaurants around

Iberville Suite ( reasonably priced restaurants, cheap and good

even better , family style)

Thanks so much

Combine it with a swamp tour. I have no plantation recommendations but we loved Honey Island Swamp Tours on the Pearl River in Slidell.

I'm not sure how long the drive is to Slidell from Iberville Suites....maybe 30 minutes? We had friends from Scotland stay at the Iberville Suites in December. They took an excellent swamp tour and were picked up at the hotel. I'll email them to see which one they took.

We have always loved Laura Plantation...great tour., but it is in the opposite direction from Slidell. There are several other plantations near Laura which you could combine (taking pics at Oak Alley from the levee and maybe St. Francisco Plantation (I think that's the right name) plus eating lunch would make for a full day.

Deanie's, Felix' Oyster Bar, Acme Oyster Bar, Red Fish Grill, Palace Cafe and Galatoire's (more upscale) are restaurants that are very close to your hotel.

I'll keep you posted on the swamp tour info.

We had a car last time we were there, and did a swamp tour too. We did Oak Alley Plantation. We loved it, simply because it really felt like a plantation and the house is lovely. They've filmed alot of movies there, and if you're over 21, when I was there, you could get mint julips to enjoy on the sweeping front porch, on one of the benches in the grounds...sigh.

It's about a 45min-1 hr drive from Iberville Suites to the Honey Island Swamp tour locations.

It's about a 1.5 hr drive from Laura Plantation to the Honey Island Swamp tour, so if you wanted to do both, I would schedule the early morning swamp tour, and then head over to Laura. Have lunch next door at B&C Seafood, and then take a tour of Laura.

HI I loveLouisanna, thanks for contacting your friend in Scotland to let

me know more about the Swamp tour.

Also thanks to everyone else for the wonderful idea. Please keep me posted if you can think of anything else.

Also let me know of cheap and good eats around Iberville, French quarter ,

Garden District, Warehouse district. I suppose these are the areas that

every first time visitor visit. If you can let me know which restaurant is in

which district, that would be great, as I am first timer to New Orleans., that

would make it easier for me to research more into the restaurant.

Thanks for everyone's input again.

I think you will find this helpful.

http://www.nomenu.com/open/index.html

Click on restaurants in the "French Quarter", "CBD", " Warehouse District", and "Garden District". This will provide rating, price and a link to the restaurant's website. I find it quite good and accurate.

I listed in an earlier post several restaurants quite near your hotel. In New Orleans, it really is hard to find a bad meal.

I'll let you know about the swamp tour.

If you drive out to Oak Alley Plantation, you can stop at Laura Plantation, too. They are very close together, but very different styles and the tours are different as well. There used to be a hole in the wall restaurant / store on the way called B&C Seafood. Wonderful po boys and cajun/creole eats. Worth looking into this one.

Some tour companies pick you up at your hotel. Depending on what you choose, this might turn out to be cheaper than renting a car. Just a thought.

As for must-see neighborhoods for a first time visit ... it depends on how much time you have to spend. You could easily spend it all in the French Quarter. We like to ride the St. Charles streetcar all the way out to the end in the River Bend area. Very inexpensive. If you think you will want to get off and explore on a few stops, then it could be worth your money to get a transportation pass rather than pay the $1.25 per person each time you get on the streetcar.

Check out one of the above ground cemetaries. Best seen with a tour group for several reasons.

Enjoy.

Hi , seems like one of the message said it is 1.5 hour drive from plantation

to Honey Island Swamp tour. Since that is quite a drive, if we have to

choose between plantation or Swamp tour, which one would you

choose, and then what would you do afterward to make use of the

rental car that we would get that day. I read in the internet there is

a Airboat Adventure, Is that sort of like the swamp tour, and if so, how

far is this from Iberville Suite ? We have a teenager, we figure out we

will have some activities for her so she would not be bored, as I doubt

she will be interested in history of NO. We have 4 people, so that is

far I think we will drive to these activities as I understand the tour company

charge quite a bit for transportation.

Thanks for all your help with our vacation planning
