St Patrick's Day in NOLA

Thinking of escaping the NE winter for a few days mid March. Is St Patrick's Day a time to avoid in New Orleans (in terms of crazy drunken crowds and extra high prices)? Or would a 51 year old mom and 27 year old daughter looking for a few days of warmer weather, good food, a few hurricanes at Pat's, and a tour or two (maybe garden district and lower 9th) have a good time on a relatively small budget? Thanks for any advice!

I've been for Saint Patrick's Day weekend 4 of the past 5 years. It can get busy and can also be pricey, depending on what else is going on in town. Sometimes there are conventions at the same time.

The parades usually take place the weekend before Saint Patrick's Day. This year with Mardi Gras being so late (March 8th) that means the uptown parade will roll just a few days after that. Should be interesting.

Hard to help with the "relatively small budget" part of your question without knowing specifics and the exact dates of your visit. You might want to start by pricing some hotels on third party sites like expedia.com or hotels.com to see what matches the budget.

St. Pat's Day itself is on a Thursday this year so the only parade that will be 'rolling' is the Downtown Irish Club. I say "rolling" but am using it lightly because this is predominantly a walking parade that starts past the Marigny and ends on Bourbon.

All the other St. Pat's parades in NOLA will roll the weekend before.

It'll probably be festive and more crowded than most Thursday nights in the Quarter but it won't be packed by any means.

As someone who marches in the Downtown Irish Club parade, I can just say that we never have problems with the crowds in the Quarter that night, especially if it's a weeknight. And if you're here, be sure to tell the peeps in the parade you're from out-of-town -- chances are they'll reward you with flowers or beads.

The Irish Channel Marching Club has their parade the Saturday before on the 12th, usually starts at 1 pm. It has a pretty long route Uptown which includes Magazine St (where the Bulldog is). My husband and his goofy friends are part of the fun and the "party" is pretty much the parade. Magazine St will be packed. The block party in the Irish Channel is on St Patrick's Day the following Thursday.
