New Orleans - March or April?

We are planning a trip to New Orleans for the first time. Which is a better month to be there - March or April? I am hoping to see lots of flowers in bloom and have good weather. Any suggestions?

April weather is best but there are tons of festivals so hotel rates will be higher and rooms will be more scarce. I think the first week in April is best to avoid festivals. We've been in the 2nd/3rd week and the weather was GORGEOUS.

April has better weather. I'll let a horticulturist speak to the flowers. If you are looking for lots of activity and fun (and high hotel rates), French Quarter Festival is 4/12 - 4/15. See:

The preceeding weekend (4/7) looks relatively quiet; but there's something going on most every weekend in NOLA.

The NCAA Men's Final Four BB Tournament is March 31 to April 3 I think. I would plan something the end of April. May would be even better. Enjoy your visit.

If you want warm weather and flowers blooming, go in April. I've been twice in April and it was gorgeous! If you are planning for this coming April though, you'd better start looking at hotels and book now! As previously said, April is a busy month.

I don't think mush is happening (event wise) April 4th -11th...you might want to check prices then.

Porelly...if you loved April for warm weather and flowers, you're gonna LOVE May!!!!

I am going in the middle of April. I changed my flight so I will fly in early on Saturday, have Saturday and Sunday for the French quarter music festival, then Monday and most of Tuesday will be spent for sightseeing.

Not sure whether to do theswamp or plantation tour for Tuesday.

In my honest opinion if this is your first time to New Orleans there is so much to do and see just in the French Quarter that it might seem like you're trying to squeeze in too much adding the swamp or plantations.

Thanks so much for your responses! We're shooting for mid-April, working on hotel availability right now. Looking forward to it!

I agree with SoulCat on this one Coloradan! That might not be enough time to squeeze in a swamp tour because they usually take 1/2 a day to do! Once you fall in love with NOLA and plan a longer stay then a swamp tour would be just fine!
