food and music questions

Is this possible? Blue Nile at 7 p.m. for Kermit Ruffins and then Howlin Wolf at 10 pm.(we have tickets). If we were to do this....at what time do you suggest we be at both for seating and when/where shall we eat?

Thanks...be there on Friday.

Also..is the Carousel Bar really great...I think I am making my hotel choice because of it...is it hard to get a seat? What should we drink there?

Thanks..almost time!

Laura--I have never had a drink at the Carousel Bar because there's never been seats when we show up! I am dying to have a drink there though! We figure we're going to show up about 10 minutes BEFORE they open and wait! Since you'll be staying at the hotel I'm sure you'll be luckier at getting a seat. I guess sometimes you just have to be patient (not a virtue of mine). The place gets rave reviews here on this forum! I'm sure you'll like it lots! Let us know!!!!! Have a great time!

I wouldn't predicate my choice of hotel on the Carousel Lounge! Mind you, it's a good bar, but there are other bars nearby as good (or better) where you'll have an easier time snagging a seat.

That said, I'm a fan of the Monteleone Hotel for its location and classic New Orleans feel. (If you decide on the Monteleone, spring for a larger-than-standard room if you can manage it. The least expensive rooms are small.)

If staying at the Monteleone, you could hop across the street to Mr. B's for Barbecued Shrimp before hoofing it over to Frenchmen Street (a 20-25 minute stroll).

If you'd prefer to eat in Marigny, Three Muses is right down the street from the clubs. It's a "small plate" joint, where you could sample a variety of dishes:

Kermit's popular, so I'd get to Blue Nile no later than 25 minutes before the show. That'll give you time to settle in and order a drink.

Have fun!

NOLA has some great bars. Before you go to Howlin Wolf stop by Ernst's Cafe and Lucy's for drinks and good bar food. Walk across Canal on N Peters and go W on S Peters 4/5 blocks to the corner of Lafayette and S Peters to Ernst Cafe which is over 100 years old for good happy hour and crawfish. They have outdoor tables. Then go W a block to Girod and go N 2 blocks to Lucy's Bar on Tchoupitoulas for a good 4 to 7 happy hour and $2.50 beer.

Lucy's Bar @ 701 Tchoupitoulas St., New Orleans, LA 504 - 523 - 8995.

Ernst Cafe @ 600 South Peters Street, New Orleans, LA 504 - 525 - 8544.

Howlin Wolf is about 2/3 blocks from Ernst's. Ugly Dog Saloon is close also and they have good BBQ.

Here's a link to 5 great NOLA hotel bars. The Windsor Court is a good one.

Arnaud's French 75 Bar is a good one. Chris Hannah is the barman and one of the best in the city. Hannah is also a bartender in the old fashioned sense and takes the role as host seriously.

French 75 Bar @ 813 Rue Bienville, New Orleans, LA. 504 - 523 - 5433.

Bar Tonique is at the N side of the French Quarter. I don't like Rampart. Ed Diaz is the owner and he's serious about the cocktail program.

Bar Tonique @ 820 North Rampart Street, New Orleans, LA 504 - 324 - 6045.

Bar Uncommon @ Renaissance New Orleans Pere Marquette Hotel

817 Common Street, New Orleans, LA 504 - 525 - 1111.

Bombay Club is a good one. Cheryl Charming is the manager and works behind the bar on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Bombay Club @ 830 Conti Street, New Orleans, LA 504 - 586 - 0972.

Napoleon House Bar & Cafe @ 500 Chartres St., New Orleans, LA. 504 - 524 - 9752.

This is all so helpful! Thank you! Do you think we can walk from Blue Nile to Howling Wolf? Should we cab it?

You could walk it but it will take you about 40 minutes. It's 1 & 3/4 miles. Take a cab if you are pressed for time.

There's a United Cab stand in Marigny, not far from Washington Square Park. Add United to your cell phone........

504-522-9771 and 504-524-8380

........and phone them when Kermit lets out. They should be able to pick you up on, or near Frenchmen Street within five minutes.
