St Louis Cathedral

There are very few who visit the French Quarter without getting their picture taken with the beautiful St Louis Cathedral as background. I have recently given some thought to what makes it such a superb building. I think the basic simplicity of the design, the three steeples, combined with the light gray paint, make it so striking. It is not overdone, like some cathedrals are, thus making it absolutely perfect for its location. Combine that with its fascinating history (stlouiscathedral.org/early_history.html) and it does indeed represent New Orleans and the French Quarter in an outstanding manner.

I would hope that those who visit Jackson Square also take a look at the inside and make a generous contribution to the upkeep of this historical treasure.

Totally agree about this beautiful church. We always go say our prayers, light our candles, and leave donations. The church organ sounds absolutely heavenly when you are lucky enough to hear it being played. The gift shop is also very nice and has many wonderful items!

I wish we could have seen the earlier versions before it was rebuilt in 1850. It seems slightly out of place/manicured compared to the old world Nola that surrounds it. But we go in every time we're there, and since we've seen the best churches and cathedrals of Rome and Paris, that's saying something. It's certainly not in the same league of beauty/majesty, but it has a charm about it that brings us back every time!
