Bars with food and free music - any suggestions?

Hi

Sorry if this subject's been covered before - but I'd like to find a bar in the French Quarter which serves good Creole/Southern food, has decent cocktails, has (preferably) free live music, which isn't too touristy but also which isn't too much of a dive. All suggestions would be gratefully received. Many thanks in anticipation.

Very few bars in the Quarter charge a cover for music. "Passing the hat" for tips is much more common. Having said that, the bars with good music, (or "any" music, really!) don't tend to do food. Or at least good food. And the restaurants with good food don't tend to do music, for the most part.

I'd concentrate on finding a good restaurant for dinner, and then heading out after for some good music. You may want to get out of the French Quarter for both. Frenchmen Street is a good option for music.

Check out www.gazebocafenola.com. Sit outside and enjoy a beverage of choice and listen to some music. The food is OK also. My favorite drink there is the Dreamsickle Daiquri made with real ice cream.

Though there are several good options in the Quarter for music and cocktails that are not dives, as stated above, there are few that offer food, as well. The Gazebo is a nice outdoor option, however, they close early and don't have a band every day. Palm Court Jazz Café on Decatur might be a place you would like. Not a dive, good jazz and reasonably priced food. For excellent jazz/ nice drinks in a super nice setting, I would visit Irwin Mayfield's Playhouse in the Royal Sonesta Hotel or the Davenport Lounge in the Ritz Carlton which is on the border of the Quarter. For more jazz/drinks, I would visit Fritzel's, Café Beignet (an outdoor option with snacks across from the Royal Sonesta), Maison Bourbon or Preservation Hall. Of the ones I have mentioned, only Preservation Hall has a cover and these are all in the Quarter. Also, as has been mentioned, you might enjoy Frenchmen St. jazz.

Drinks, having a higher profit margin than food, are what is typically coupled with free live music. One exception is the Sunday jazz brunches. Another exception mentioned above, Palm Court Jazz Cafe, serving creole/southern food, is closed for vacation and renovations, reopening September 18. See:

There are several options outside of but relatively close to the French Quarter. In Marigny, there is Buffa's which offers music at various times Wednesday through Saturday evenings, and Sunday brunch, along with food, some of which is creole/southern. See:

Also in Marigny, on Frenchmen St., is The Three Muses, with a broad music selection and interesting and sophisticated food selection (but not typically creole/southern). See:

On the other side of the French Quarter, in the Central Business District, is the relatively new Little Gem Saloon. It offers dining room music at various times. There is also a music showroom upstairs. The food is somewhat creole/southern. See:
