Hotel Monteleone or Hotel Provincial?

Hello! I've been to New Orleans several times now, the last time in August 2012 - and I don't regret going in August, but we're looking at early January (post Sugar Bowl, pre-Carnival) for our next trip! Our usual hotel, The W over by the warehouse district/casino kind of let us down last time so we're looking for something new and thinking about staying in the FQ proper for the first time. Based on Trip Advisor reviews and recommendations from friends we have it narrowed down to either the Hotel Monteleone or Hotel Provincial. Both average out to about $700 total for the dates we're looking for. We might try renting a car this time too, and exploring a bit farther out, so parking may be a factor.

We're not going to New Orleans to hang out in the hotel, but are looking for something clean and comfortable and not too loud. And advice is greatly appreciated!

DH and I stayed at the Monteleone for a convention this past June. It was a beautiful, grand hotel. The service was wonderful, and the room was nicely decorated, comfortable, and clean. Beg for a room with a river view! I will say that the bathroom is -- cozy -- but it was plenty big enough for 2 people.

I can't imagine being disappointed with this hotel.

Hi Joan, I'm one of the big fans of the Provincial. I think the Monteleone is a GORGEOUS hotel (and as we changed hotels each time before we found the Provincial) in the top 3 choices of our "next stay". Then we stayed at the Provincial, and next month will be our 8th straight stay. Other than the staff, which is the greatest, the hotel, to me, oozes true New Orleans. The rooms are clean, the beds are the best ever, and it's in a quieter residential end. I'm more attracted to that end and what's there than I am with the other end and Bourbon Street (but that's me, and others may prefer what I don't) There is parking, you're within walking distance to Frenchmen Street at night (not a factor for me) and two or 3 blocks from Bourbon or Jackson Square. I just fell head over heels for the place! That's my take, and I'm sure others will prefer the Monteleone. It's not really advice--just my humble opinion! I'm sure you'll enjoy wherever you choose!

I've stayed in both and the Monteleone since I was a kid. I love them both equally well but I will agree with Hermicane. The location at the Hotel Provincial is just a teensy bit better. You really do get that quaint neighborhood feel. The staff is truly accommodating, as if you might be the only person who matters.

The two hotels are really different. The Monteleone is one of the tallest buildings and largest hotels in the quarter. It has uniformed bellmen and doormen and concierges and room service and rooftop pool with views of the city. It has a lavish lobby and a world famous bar. It is in the quarter..."barely" with a closer relationship to the central business district than the quiet residential areas of the quarter. The Provincial is a part of and looks like the french quarter - pretty courtyards and balconies and low rooftops and it is in a part of the quarter which talks of the beauty and history of New Orleans. It has smaller lobby facilities genial employees and is kind of laid back. I hope I have described them accurately. You have picked two wonderful and well-liked hotels. I would suggest that you query each of the hotels as to exactly what your room will be like. Monteleone for example, has some very small rooms which face lightwells, and some beautiful rooms with river views. Provincial has a huge variety of rooms and there are experts here who know every nuance of them. I think you will love either of them. I would!

We have stayed at each three times and its a tossup however our no. 2 favorite restaurant is across the street from the Monteleone..Mr. B's so that causes a slight tilt that way.

We have stayed at and like both, but they are quite different. Monteleone is a rather large "full service" hotel, while Provincial is a smaller "boutique". Monteleone is in the more commercial upper French Quarter, while Provincial is in the more residential lower French Quarter. The "typical" room at Provincial will probably be larger than that at Monteleone. Monteleone is probably closer to more of the most popular attractions; Provincial is set in a more serene environment. Neither is the subject of many street noise complaints, although the particularly noise sensitive might want to avoid second story rooms with windows overlooking the street at both. Provincial offers somewhat easier access to parked vehicles, and a location that is easier to access when driving your own vehicle.

Thanks, all! I was already leaning slightly toward Hotel Provincal, since it's near one of my favorite restaurants (Eat) and favorite dive bars (Aunt Tiki's), plus we have always stayed closer to Canal before...so I'm thinking we'll give it a shot. Will stop by the Carousel Bar for a drink, though!

I like the Provencial better too. It is just more my speed. The Monteleon is really nice, but it is a little more full-service for my tastes. Just a personal preference.

We stayed at The Monteleone for our first but not last visit to NOLA! We loved it but the beds were "too soft" for us! The hotel was gorgeous and full service. Not noisy at all. We wont be staying there again. We will probably try the Hotel Provincial.

I stayed at HP last visit. Not as grandiose an Monteleone but feels like home. All I had to do was drop Herms name and I was in like Flynn.
