We stayed in the Hotel Indigo about 6 months ago. It was wonderful. Very large room, streetcar stop right out the front door, easy access to the Quarter. We love the area. The also have gated parking.

Haven't stayed at either since I'm local so will let others speak to that. Hotel Indigo is a brand-new renovation of an old Ramada location. It has the advantage of being a bit closer to the Quarter and the part of the Garden District with the most ornate homes. Just in the downtown direction from the Indigo, St. Charles Ave. between Jackson and Clio Sts. is primarily commercial and has quite a few restaurants and bars.

The Best Western is an older property which also has secured parking and a streetcar stop virtually at the front door. There is a handful of casual restaurants and bars (including a wine bar) nearby and the Columns Hotel is a block further Uptown for having a drink on the veranda. There is an upscale grocery two blocks down on the corner of St. Charles and La. Ave. where you can pick up to-go food and alcohol. There is also a stop for the hop-on/hop-off bus on that same corner if that's of interest.

You're generally safe on St. Charles and the neighborhoods on the river (south) side of St. Charles during the day. I would recommend you avoid the neighborhood on the lake (north) side of St. Charles as it tends to be sketchy until you get up to around Marengo St. (near Napoleon).
