Trip Report 12/22 - 12/27

After being up most of the night checking on airline cancellations as a result of some major weather events, we were off to the airport at 4 am for our 6:30 flight to NOLA. Horray.... we made it!! We arrived early afternoon... retrieved our bag and immediately made our way back upstairs to Dookie Chase's (sp?) for our first abita ambers in a year..... so good. There was a major thunderstorm going on but we caught a cab to the Hotel St. Marie in the FQ.

I guess I should have checked my reservation better because apparently we were not booked there for more than 1 night.... Thankfully there was a room available but we most likely would have to change rooms for our last night.... ok by me. We hopped over to a nearby mini-market for a few supplies for the room. It was storming like crazy.... was it just me or is the thunder louder in NOLA? Rain aside..... we were back!!!!!

I'll add more in a reply.

I could hardly wait to get out so off we went but it was coming down in buckets with crazy thunder and lightening so we decided to wait it out at the Vacherie bar. We sat and chatted with folks for a while... then a while longer... and longer yet.... the storm wouldn't quit, it seemed to be rolling around the Quarter. At this point we were very hungry so I'm thinking, where can we go really close by with some good eats. We were saving the wonderful Vacherie restaurant for Christmas. We decided on the Chartres House restaurant and we weren't disappointed. Hubby ordered the almond crusted red-fish and I had seafood pasta, which we shared and really enjoyed. By now we were exhausted from lack of sleep and called it a very early night.

good start despite the weather...drinks and food...it does seem the thunder storms get very intense.

Monday morning was still raining early but the weather forecast promised clearing. We grabbed a breakfast sandwich from the small deli at the hotel and back in the room, planned our day. Since it was the 23rd, and we couldn't remember what was open or closed Christmas Eve and Day, we decided it would be a shopping day. Off to the French Market we went. I had promised a friend some NOLA teddy bear key chains which he loved. With a new canvas carry bag, a replenished supply of spices, a couple of warm scarves (a cold front was rolling in), and 4 teddy bear key chains, we were ready for a highly anticipated EGN marg! My fave is the house marg, hubby had the lime.... they were so so good... no question the best margs in the Qwata! Our next stop was Pat O'Briens to say hello to Sharlene and to have our first of many Hurricane's. Sharlene gives many hugs and kisses to us and the Canadian sisters!!

Next stop was Acme for my char-grilled oysters. With a massive line, we decided on Felixe's. They were awesome as ever. After our fill we hit the Bayou Club... can't remember the name of the band but the guy on the accordian had that good ol' cajun music rockin' the house LOL! Our first full day was a blast!

Christmas Eve - The weather had cooled like crazy.... pashmina scarves were in order.... I was pleased with my purchases. We had planned a trip to Laura Plantation. The bus picked us up at 8:30. After a few stops at other hotels we were on our way. The driver was quite funny and the ride was enjoyable as he pointed out things of interest along the way eg: lake Ponchatrane being shallow and great for fishing, Katrina broken levies etc . The first stop was Laura, after-which he was dropping others off at Oak Alley. We loved the tour. The tour guide was very informative and we learned so much about what life was like in the Creole Plantation days for Laura's family. She also compared the plantations for us... English vs French.... kind of interesting being from Canada LOL! We saw the main house, what was left of the outdoor kitchen (imagine a kitchen outside the house.. ) and one of what were 65 slave cabins.... plus gardens etc.

After our tour, the driver took us to pick up those who had chosen to visit Oak Alley and he stopped for about 1/2 hour so we could grab a drink and sandwich, and even slowed down so we could see the mighty Oaks at the entrance to this plantation. He pointed out the wood structures built for the huge bon-fires along the Mississippi River Road. I now have more plantation tours on my list for future visits.

The driver asked where we would like to be dropped of in the FQ so we chose down at the French Market. I had a major craving for another EGN marg LOL! Afterwards, we made our way to finally meet our lovely Rodent . I spotted her as she arrived..... I think it was the purple hair that gave her away LOL! It was so wonderful meeting you sweetie!

Hungry, we decided on some fried chicken. I had so many plans for trying something new but Brothers Deli it was.... take out back at the hotel to rest our aged and tired feet and to warm up a bit. It was just so good though. Later we wandered Bourbon St and ended up at the TI where I unfortunately tried my first hand grenade..... turns out I love melon drinks.... We met 3 lovely people from Alabama and danced and drank the night away..... loads of fun!!!

Christmas day - I woke up to hubby asking me where a particular jacket came from! I slapped my aching head and checked the pockets to find a camera with several pics of hubby and I.... I knew that minute that it belonged to one of the gang from Alabama we had met the night before. Upon leaving the bar, I had grabbed all the coats on the floor in front of me thinking they were only ours!!! Our original plans to visit St. Augustine's for mass were stashed away till next time and we took our time, then enjoyed a fabulous Christmas brunch at the Vacherie restaurant. It was as awesome as I remembered from last year! We then walked over to Harrah's casino to give our usual donation.

Next on the agenda was to try to get the jacket back to its owner! We had talked about Pat O'Briens which opened at 4 pm Christmas day. The other option was to return it to the TI bar-tender in the hopes he would return there. First we tried Pat O's. Our friends were nowhere to be found. We sat for a Hurricane and waited, while the wonderful Sharlene welcomed us back again. We met a family from Calgary Canada who were 5 of them, mom, dad, and 3 younger adults. They had heard about the magnum and wanted one. They were told they needed a minimum of 6 people and so there we were... invited to their table. Since we were having a slow day... we participated minimally but it was fun to watch everyone in the packed courtyard come over to take pics.

After a short time we left to go back to the TI with the jacket still hoping to return it to its owner. We left the jacket with the bartender, ordered a drink and the bartender returned the good news that the jacket had been returned to the owner..... yippee.... I was so happy!!!! It was a Merry Christmas for sure LOLOL! We were told they had gone to Pat O's. Back we went so I could say sorry in person..... the Calgary family hadn't put much of a dent in their magnum but there was a pizza box on the table LOLOL! Anyway, to my utmost dismay, we ended up with horrible pizza as dinner on Christmas day!!!! So much for all of my culinary plans.

Dec 26th, last full day. After breakfast, we made our way back to the hotel to find out whether we had to change rooms or could possibly stay in ours. There was no information yet but they would contact us. We spent a quiet and relaxing few hours in the room. Eventually we received the call that we didn't have to leave the room. I was glad that we didn't have to move but disappointed since we had cancelled some plans. Anyway, we decided to visit the Presbytere Katrina exhibit and really enjoyed it. Although I had watched the horrors on TV at the time, and visited some of the damage a few years ago, I still was so moved by the exhibit. I still can't even fathom the horrors that were.

Bourbon St was hopping again and Dwayne Dopsie was at Krazy Korner. We were truly exhausted, so afterwards stopped in at Yo Mamas for a delicious burger and mac and cheese. Back in our hotel, I decided to have just a short nap..... 6:30 pm..... woke up at 2:30 am!!!!!!

Summary - this year I had plans for some truly new dining experiences.... didn't much happen. I never even made it to some true favourites - Red Gravy for sure! Once again I missed City Park and never saw this year's Foulton Street's Christmas decorations. We didn't get to St. Augustine's mass, which I loved last year. The couple of plans I had for a TA meet were missed. As is the nature of trips to NOLA, things come along that pull us to the wayside..... and as also is the nature of trips to NOLA, we had a wonderful visit and can't wait for the next!!!!!!

OMG Karen! Those delicious margs, the magnum at Pat's, the jacket from your Alabama friends, Cherlyn...everything ! Glad you got the jacket back to its' rightful owner! I know that was probably bothering you! Alls well that ends well as Shakespeare once said!

Sounds like you had a wonderful time even if you did have to put up with a little rain! (At least it wasn't the freezing kind :)

So happy that you made it to Nola and they didn't cancel your flight. Isn't Rodent a lovely lady? We always look forward to seeing her when we're down there too!

Thanks for giving Cherlyn our love and good wishes! Glad she made your time at Pat's good too! She is the best! Thanks for sharing your trip report--just so happy you made it!!!!!

Thanks Den, we had really good time. Sorry about the mis-spelling for Cherlyn at Pat O's. She is truly a doll. Cajun, the weather could not come close to dampening our excitement of actually making it there.

A magnum with only 7 people?!??!? I feel the hangover already. ;-)

When you started xmas day about the jacket, I thought your hubby had surprised you with a xmas gift.

Sounds like a good time, txs for sharing.
