Mardi Gras Indians - St. Joseph’s Night

Does anyone have any experience in seeing the Mardi Gras Indians parade on St. Joseph’s Night?

Unfortunately I don’t arrive until Monday 17th March, so miss their Super Sunday event.

I appreciate the areas they parade may be off the tourist track, but has anyone seen them before and can offer advice and the best areas to catch them?

I live in one of the neighborhoods where they parade: 7th Ward. One of their practice spaces is right down the street from me. I live off of St. Bernard on Marais and they usually come right by my house, or I can just walk a few blocks towards Claiborne and find the rest of the party. I would say come down here around 7 p.m., in the area between Claiborne, Marais, St. Bernard and St. Anthony. They usually stick around those blocks and then head Uptown to battle with the Uptown gangs. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply.

I’m possibly looking at hiring a bike to visit the areas they parade.

I see last year via Facebook a bike ride was organized to visit various different Indian parades on St. Joseph’s Night.

Not sure if there is one organized for this year though? It would be something I’d definitely be interested in attending.

For st Joseph's night uptown, Washington abd LaSalle intersection is ground zero. They will be coming from all over the neighborhood around there.

Thanks. We've hired bikes on St. Joseph's Day, so hopefully we can have a cycle around and see them.

Bumping up, cause it's today, Wednesday.

I managed to get Wednesday off instead of Thursday this week specifically for this. :) We're planning to look for the Downtown tribes and from what I'm reading, here and elsewhere, St. Bernard/Marais, St. Bernard/Claiborne and Orleans/Claiborne are the most likely spots?

Thank you for mentioning the time, Beth Ann. I was a bit confused, as I kept reading "after sunset" and yet seeing pictures from previous years that looked like taken in daylight. 7pm-ish it is then. :)

This was probably one of the most wonderful things I have had a privilege to witness. Lots of photos to come on facebook.

Now looking forward to Sunday.
