First time to New Orleans, leaving Sunday. Questions.

We are staying at Hilton Riverside, what would be my least expensive way to get there from airport? It's just my husband and I.

We want to do the swamp/plantation tour. Should I book it before we leave, or wait till we get there?

We won't get to hotel on Sunday, till about 6, what's a good restaurant for our first evening ? We don't have a car .

Any other suggestions for first timers would be great.

We return home on Thursday..

Thanks !

Well, least expensive might not be the best. There is likely an inexpensive bus or you can take a shuttle and both will take FOREVER. I recommend a cab. It's a flat rate for 2 people from the airport to the FQ - $34? + tip.

My recommendation is drop your bags and walk right downstairs to Drago's for chargrilled oysters. I honestly don't really recommend having your whole dinner there (unless your whole dinner is chargrilled oysters) but this is a delicious welcome to the city and will satisfy you and then if you want to sit down to a nicer dinner later, you can do that, or stop one or two other places for appetizers.

Enjoy!

#1 - TAXI!!! It is not the least expensive, but as Heather said, the least expensive is NOT the best. It's actually $33 plus tip (we usually give the driver $40)

#2 - Don't book the swamp tour until you're there. There is always space and you want to make sure it's a nice day. The concierge at the Hilton can help you!

#3 - While I've never eaten at Drago's, it's HIGHLY recommended (I, personally, am not a seafood fan) and it's a "first stop" for many people (again, as Heather suggested, just the oysters to satisfy you until you get to dinner. There are a bunch of restaurants nearby that are also highly recommended, including Mannings and Ernst.

Good info. above, and I'll add Grand Isle to the restaurants very near your hotel. I love their Chili Butter Baked Fish entrée.

I agree with all the suggestions so far. We recently ate at Grand Isle. I had the BBQ shrimp and the other 3 in our group ordered the fried shrimp plate. Magnificent. We also enjoyed Cafe Adelaide in the Loews Hotel on this past trip. If you want super casual, walk across the street and eat at one of the restaurants in Harrah's casino. There's actually an Acme there now. (We have not tried it.)

Enjoy your visit.

You wanted any other suggestions and I will give you - wear good walking shoes, do not plan a full day, give yourself time to wander, drink and eat, wander, drink and eat some more and then try to fit in some more wander. Listen to music you have never listened to, go into bars you would not go into, wander the most beautiful city you have ever been in, and rest when you get home.

enjoy

Kevanbt - I love your suggestions! Even after many, many trips to New Orleans, I still find that my plans usually go astray because it is so much fun to just wander!
