Hilton Riverside Safe Walk Late?

First, let me say that this is not anywhere near my first choice of hotel. I was fortunate enough to visit NOLA three times last year and stayed at Bourbon Orleans each visit. I have wanted to visit during Halloween and mentioned this to my gambling-loving parents and they coincidentally received offers for this very time and were able to secure two rooms (one being a bump to the Hilton). The hotel rates are pretty high for this period, so I am thankful for the freebie!

I am bringing a friend and we will likely spend the majority of our time in the French Quarter(this is her first time). I have done some map questing to find that distance to my favorite places are indeed in walking distance. My concern is returning during late hours. Should we opt for cabs if we are not too inebriated/tired lol or will it be a safe walk?

How late is late? It's always a good idea to take a taxi if you've had a bit too much to drink.

Typically there is a lot of foot traffic on Canal headed to and from the casino until after midnight.

And speaking of the casino, use it as a shortcut and to avoid the empty block of S. Peters Street late at night. Walk in the Canal Street entrance of the casino (across from Doubletree) and walk out the other end and you'll be a 1 minute walk away from the Hilton.

I use Toulouse St when exiting the Quarter. Well lit, mod traffic both auto and on foot. Agree with Irish Fan regarding the casino but I also stop and use the restrooms. If coming from Frenchmen St late at nite take a cab or pedicab along Decatur St to South Peters or walk and stop at the Cafe du Monde for some late nite/ early morning beignets. BTW cute little Boston. My rescue Boston is about 13 yrs old and a wonderful gentle pet.

The area within a block or two of the Casino is, for obvious reasons, pretty safe and secure. Decatur St. and the portion of Canal St. on the River side of Royal St. are also well traveled and relatively safe until late. Although this may be changing with time, I avoid N. Peters (between Decatur and Canal Sts.), Clinton, Front and N. Clay Streets, and the adjoining portion of Iberville and Conti Streets, on foot after 11 PM. As mentioned above, Toulouse St. is a good way to get from Bourbon St. to Decatur St.

I agree with the above - with a bit of common sense, and the suggested streets, things should be fine.

Also, the Hilton Riverside is a nice inn. It does lack the history and charm of so many other properties, so you ARE giving that up, but the service, and our rooms, have always been very good, to excellent.

If you get a VIP floor, take it, for access to their VIP Lounge. Probably the best view of any Hilton VIP Lounge on earth.

Enjoy,

I agree! Since the demise of the Hilton Paris (not to be confused with Paris Hilton lol) where one had the "just down the street" view of the Eiffel Tower, the Hilton Riverside lounge takes the prize for sure!. I love siiting up there with a cup of coffee watching the sunrise.

Thank you so much everyone! I would assume we wouldn't be out later than 12-12:30 a.m. and it seems like I have been in that area around midnight and recall enough foot traffic, so I remember feeling safe.

Thank you SoDaK, Rodie is my 2.5 yr old and he is a handful. How fortunate that your rescue is 13! I wish him/her many healthy years to come.

IrishFan,

You bring back memories. I had booked the Hilton Arc de Triomphe in Paris. in the Charles De Gaulle Suite, with two balconies with views of the Eiffel Tower, rose petals from the door to the sunken tub, and a bottle of Tattinger ready for my wife. Unfortunately, while we were in London, just prior to Paris, the Hilton was forced out! I ended up with a suite, but let's just say that it was not what we had originally booked, but OK. Such is life, but we survived.
