Day 5, Sunday October 22
This is out of order. I have not posted day 4 but will do so later.
Craving hamburgers for lunch, we walked to the Clover Grill on Bourbon. This was my 2nd visit here. The burgers are cooked under hubcaps and are even better than Port of Call’s burgers. This place is very small but we got here for an early lunch so the wait was only 5 minutes for a table. It can get crowded here and food can take awhile to be prepared. They have cooked breakfast also but the burgers and tater tots are my favorite.
My sister went to the airport to fly back home to Florida and I checked into the Courtyard by Marriott at 124 St. Charles Ave which was right off Canal Street next to Myer the Hatter. I stayed here for free because I signed up for Mariott’s credit card and received a certificate for a free night. The hotel is a chain and was very clean and nice.
My buddy from Metairie stopped by and he drove me all over New Orleans to sightsee. We went by Fat’s Domino’s house in the lower 9th ward. This area has been cleaned up a little since I was here in February for Mardi Gras but it is still dead. No people living there that I could see. We went all over uptown, warehouse district, central city, Carrollton, Bywater, and the lower 9th ward.
My friend did not have lunch and he wanted to go to Port of Call. I just had a baked potato while he had a burger and potato. It was very crowded here even though it was about 3 PM. It took awhile to get a drink at the bar because there were so many people standing around the bar. I had been here before and think the burgers are better at Bud’s Broiler and the Clover Grill.
Stopped into Harrahs’s to replace my players card that I had lost. For a Sunday evening, I was surprised that the blackjack tables were $15 minimum bets. Played about 45 minutes and my $60 was gone.
Ate a late dinner at the Ernst Cafe. This is more of a sports bar that serves food. The shrimp po boy was good.
Monday morning we stopped by Central Grocery to get some muffalettas to go home and they were closed. I knew they were closed on Sunday but did not know they closed on Mondays too. My friend back at work was disappointed. I had a cooler ready to bring back 2 muffs. One for me and one for him. Oh well. I will know better next time to look at the front door for operating hours.
We had Po Boys for lunch at Johnny’s. Great as usual. I love coming here on all my trips to NO.
Later in the afternoon on the way to the airport, we stopped my Morning Call Coffee Stand in Metairie for beignets and cafe au lait. I like these better than Cafe du Monde. At least Morning Call is cleaner too. I had 2 orders to make that 6 beignets that I wolfed down and rinsed with coffee.
Made it to the airport for my 7 PM flight. Overall, one of the best times I have had in New Orleans. Again, for the average tourist, this town is back and ready for you to have a great time.
