I have returned from trip to Austria & we stayed in St.Gilgen.The lake is bigger, & the area is easily explorable if you keep base here. There are pretty good options for hotels, though not many.Since you r with kids, there are pizzerias in the village that you may wanna try.

To the contrary. There are a lot of little people activities in the area. There is a childrens playground by the lake. A swimming pool (currently closed). Animal farm with small childrens playground and pedal buggies, Abarena large commercial playground, boating, ski slope in winter, summer toboggan run, etc etc.

Nearby Bad Ischl, though much bigger seems to have less childrens amusements.

We have never stayed in St Gilgen but have stayed in Zell am See several times.

Zell offers a wide range of activities for all ages including many walks of various levels and on the Schmittenhohe (the mountain that is the backdrop for Zell) there are walks which include activities for children where they pick up a fact sheet and have to explore the wooded hillside to find many attractions (with mum and dads help!!) bike rides around the lake, train rides, boat rides on the lake together with lots of local attractions, which if you choose a hotel that is affiliated to the Zell / Kaprun Tourist card then many of the attractions are free to use some are expensive to use without the card and each person can easily save 100 Euro's with this card which includes, cable cars, swimming baths, lidos boat rides the local transport numbering up to 20 different items with further partial reductions on other places.

Zell is in a great position for other places of interest which can be reached by local transport or by hire car, these include Saltzburg, Berchtesgaden (Hitlers mountain retreat) Konigsee, Ice cave, Salt mines, Werfen Castle (Where Eagles Dare was filmed) to name just a few.

The town itself is a reasonable size and there is usually plenty going on with events throughout the summer, the events are hit and miss and vary from year to year. On top of what I have mentioned there are many other activities to take part in if you are of a mind to.

Of general interest their are several ways to get to Zell we always travel independently to Munich and drive to Zell the drive is about 2.5 hours and for most of the journey is on Autobahn we use Munich for the variety of flights and times to travel and the good access to the autobahn system, Should you want to be more conservative then the train runs from the center of the Airport (every 20 min) to the main train station in the center of Munich where trains can be boarded to many destinations One train ticket can cover up to five people!!

As I said we have been there several times and we are still finding new things to do each time we visit. Many years ago while touring with a young family we saw the sign for Zell am See, we turned the other way !! Years later we found out our mistake!!

I hope this assists you!!
