Looking for next ski trip!

We've left it late this year to book our ski trip and can't decide where to go. We are both intermediate skiers but a little on the timid side but we do like some variety and do like to test ourselves occasionally. We also like to walk around at night after dinner and maybe have a coffee or hot chocolate (sorry but we are getting on a bit!) and we like a few shop windows to peer into (oh dear that makes us sound even more boring) Anyway Ellmau looks great for skiing but not sure there would be enough to walk around in the evening. Can anyone out there let us know what the town is like apart from the apre ski bars........... thanks!

Ellmau is probably the most "town" wise of all the resorts on the Skiwelt when it comes to shops/bars/restaurants.

There must be about 20 restaurants/cafe/bars to choose from and half a dozen apres ski bars. Not much in the way of shops though. A few souvenir shops, sports shops and clothes shops then the usual handful of small supermarkets/Chemist/Off license etc

I think that Skiwelt is a quite good choice for a holiday especially if you want an extensive ski area, not difficult, reasonably priced.

The skiwelt itself offers extensive and relatively easy skiing and you can easily get around the whole area on easy blue and red runs if you wish. Brixental side nice and sunny in the afternoon (if the sun is out). Also good value for money.

The only runs that I think can pose some people problems are:

The valley run to Ellmau can get a bit icy in places - nevertheless you always see all abilities skiing down.

The Black run from the Hohe Salve although short can get difficult for some as quite narrow and gets full of Moguls and a bit icy underneath.

The first part of the red run down from the Hohe Salve to Soell can also get a bit icy.

If you don't like runs where heavy snow gets pushed up then the valley run to Brixental can be a bit tiring.

Other than that most runs relatively easy.

Another town offering reasonably priced holidays with extensive skiing and easy to get around is Mayrhofen

At the end of the day what is important to you.

Extensive ski area?

Skiing infrastructure?

large town?,

Alpine Beauty?

price?

Yes we would all like it to have everything and be cheap but often we have to compromise on one or the other.

I like Ellmau very much.I have stayed there on 6 occasions. If staying for a week and out skiing every day there is enough going on to keep you entertained evenings/nights.Varied skiing with the SkiWelt bus links (ski and Postbus) to Soll,Going,Brixental Valley,Scheffau.Postbus direct services to St Johann and even Kitzbuhel.A charming large village ( rather than a town) with a decent swimming complex and good transport links.

I stayed in Mayrhofen once.Found it more impersonal than Ellmau, probably because it is much larger. For single town location Kitz is nicer than Mayrhofen in my opinion but more expensive for everything.

Thank you WirralScouse for the info, we still haven't decided and are waiting to see what the tour companies have on offer nearer the time (we want to be away at the beginning of Feb) and we're also looking at Schladming as it appears to be a bigger village/town. However Ellmau still looks to be a good choice and we'll take on board what has been said here... thanks again.

Schladming also very good choice and in the same price brackets as Ellmau. You will find more shops/bars/restaurants etc in Schladming itself.

One word of advice especially when booking a package - the "Schladming" area includes a number of smaller villages (e.g.Haus, Rohrmoos) and some companies may class the other villages as Schladming. Check exact location

Schladming is a much better choice in my opinion.

The town center a nice pedestrian zone with good places. All levels of good skiing available and most important usually fine snow.

Rohrmoos - just above Schladming ( just several kilometers ) has numerous hotels with ski in ski out and ski school nearby.

Other good areas nearby

Schladming to host World Cup Ski Championships in several years and is greatly increasing alreday good facilities.

Easy trip south of Salzburg - normally just over one hour .

Thank you giftwerg for the tip about looking for accommodation in the Schladming area and the other information you have offered also thank you to vertical you have both convinced us that we should now look closer at Schladming rather than Ellmau...
