On a holiday in Austria, you have to make your own fun a lot of the times and isnt like a beach holiday in the sun where entertainment is always laid on.

I like St Johann, but is bigger than other villages you will find in the Tirol, which means it can get busier. The good thing though is the public transport links.

I would make sure you visit other local towns in the area such as Kitzbuhel and Zell and Zee which you can do very easily by the excellent bus services and also from the train station in the town. There are lots of other small villages around St Johann too if you want to sample those (such as Westendorf, Hopfgarten, Ellmau and Soll)

Take cable cars and chair lifts into the mountains and enjoy the walks and breathtaking scenery, and you can buy passes that cover the whole area and not just St Johann.

Going with Inghams means that they will have a lot of excursions for you to try. They are not always cheap but you saves the hassle of doing certain trips yourself, and are an excellent way to see other parts of the area, especially if its your first time in the country. They will also arrange eveing events too like Tirol evenings and bowling too

Finally cost. I dont find Austria the cheapest of countries, but you can make things cheaper. As an example dont eat at restaurants at lunchtimes. Find a supermarket and they will make sandwiches up for you at the deli counter. Buy water and drinks too from there rather than always going to cafes. Again, as mentioned where possible use public transport rather than organised trips

Hope this helps

Holidays in Tyrol are imo much better than in a club on the beach, and the local tourist boards offer a great variety of activites (most of them for free!!).

Here you´ll find all the weekly activites around St.Johann: www.kitzalps.com/en/events/default.asp…

These include guided hikes, biketours, cheese tastings, mountinbiketrips, kids activities, music events, traditional evenings, summer biathlon, free golf sessions etc.

St Johann-im-Tirol.Very nice place.Good train links to other Tyrol resorts.Saalbach and Zell am See in particular.Short bus ride to Kitzbuhel in one direction and Ellmau,Soll and Kufstein in the other.Quite a travel hub really but it does have an identity of its own.The best thing is the trips on public transport are far cheaper than reps' trips.Nowhere in Austria is cheap-by UK price standards. If you have booked a "Summer Houses" deal with Inghams please feedback on your return. Some people have been put in grotty hotels whereas others have been in B&Bs which were fine.

thanks

for the imformation,we will be looking through it

can you recommend any easy walks up in the mountains,

best getting the cable car up walking down,

as we will only be doing 2-3 walks is it still best to get a pass for the cable car or buying them as and when we need it,

what is the cost anyway??

thanks

MotherHulda will tell you about the lift passes in the area of St Johann,Kitzbuhel.I have used the lift passes in SkiWelt region in summer over the years for just what you are planning,ie cable car/mountain railway/chairlift up,walking down.Generally you begin to save money having the lift pass once you have used it twice in the week. You are going into this new experience with the right attitude and an open mind.I am sure you will both enjoy it and no reason for pessimism at all.Good luck.

you can buy plenty of walking books and maps from anywhere, and I would suggest you get one, and they will give you an of the walks and how difficult they are.

It is worth doing a little bit of planning before hand to organise a walk, as the main thing is you enjoy it and the wonderful scenery rather than doing something you will detest afterwards

If you want to use more than 2 Cable cars it is better to buy an all inclusive card. The “Kitzbüheler Alpen Summer Card” is valid for all open lifts and cable cars in the area and is available for 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 days. Three days cost € 34,50, seven days cost € 49 for adults, children pay half of it. If you want you can get public transport for additional € 2 per day.

Details: kitzalps.com/en/summer-card-rates-2009.html

Walks:

With the Kitzbüheler Alpen Summer Card you can do some nice walks/ hikes from one top station to the other.

Almost a must-do is hiking down the famous ski downhill course, the Streif. Be sure to pick up the informative folder before that!

Details: http://www.kitzalps.com/en/streif-trail.html

If you are travelling with kids, you should to the “Alpinolino” hike in Westendorf:

www.kitzalps.com/en/alpinolino-trail.html

For other tips, just surf the website kitzalps.com (http://www.skimap.kitzalps.com/default.asp?Lang=en gives you a good overview over the area)

Be sure to do the summer toboggan run.Take chairlift up and toboggan down a 1k run. One ticket to cover up and down is E6.50 but buy 3 for 2 (ie E13). Great fun!
