Ston / Mali ston

Hello all,

After the most amazing time in Croatia last summer, my girlfriend and I are returning this September. Rather than just getting the ferry from korcula to Dubrovnik as we did last year, we are considering going by bus and stopping off in ston or Mali ston.

There's very little information about them in the lonely planet guide bar a brief mention of the walls etc.

Just wondered if anyone had visited before and was looking for suggestions on:

Is it worth going?

How many nights would you recommend there, one or two?

Also, should we be looking at ston or Mali ston - or does it not matter?

Thanks very much

M&J

Hi M&J,

I'm sure more experienced forum regulars will have more to advise, as we've only dropped in to both Ston and Mali Ston on our way from Dubrovnik to Dalmatia this October and haven't stayed there, of which I regretted as I just loved both of them! https:/…5664896800966519682

If I were to choose, I would have opted for Mali Ston - it looked quieter and cosier to me, like a small fishermen's village (but again, this is an impression from just a few hours' stay).

There are several hotels right on the scenic bay, and this is here where you should go for the sea food restaurants https:/…5664923454011922434

Ston is in a walking distance or a minute drive away from Mali Ston. It is bigger (a town, not a village) and livelier than Mali Ston.

The two towns are connected with impressive walls that you can walk around https:/…5664924469220717074

Bradt guide and Rough guide have about 1.5 pages each dedicated to Ston/Mali Ston.

Forgot to add that whether it's worthy or not and the number of nights depend on what you are looking to go there for.

There wasn't any beaches as such in Mali Ston as far as I can remember. But you will find an impressive fortification and the freshest sea food there.

Ston and Mali Ston are really small and I wouldn't spend any more than a night there, two maximum.

If it's not too late to share, here is a map of the Ston and Mali Ston city walls and the 3 possible entrances. There is an estimation of walking time for the walls
