We took the bus up and train back - can't go wrong at all. Next time, we took the train up and then went on into the Alaska interior - so I've been on the trian both ways, and both are spectacular! Loved the bus stop at Emerald Lake!

Thanks for your response. Did you book through the cruise line or with Chilkout?

Both times were through the cruise line -first time we did the bus up and the train back. The next time the train from Skagway to Whitehorse was the first leg of a 10 day land tour with HAL.

Thanks again,

We are cruising on HAL and they are offering the bus up and train back.

They do not mention a bus stop at Emerald Lake while the private tour does.

Did your first tour with HAL had a stop at Emerald Lake and enough sightseing stop on the bus going up?

Yes, we booked with HAL and bused up and stopped at Emerald Lake. We stopped several times on the way up for pictures and sightseeing. It was a wonderful trip.

Is there much of a price difference when booking the White Pass railway from the cruise ship?

We are cruising with NCL in August and have a budget.

What do you recommend? Train both ways, or train and bus?

Can you book independantly once you arrive in Port?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. We are travelling with our 12 year old son.

Thankyou

Ellie.

You can book online directly with the railroad. You cannot take the train to Whitehorse. Carcross is as far as it goes at the present time

We did a tour with Chilikoot - took the train up, met up top by Chilikoot, off to Carcross for lunch, then back down by shuttle bus. Not sure on the price difference, but had less people on our train car & bus - ~ 20 people on bus, more personable IMO - our driver was able to turn the bus around so we could see a bear and caribou. It's a beautiful trip. I didn't care to be riding a charter bus with 50 + people.

We took the train up as far as Fraser and the "bus" back down. The bus was a van with a very friendly and informative guide which was all too willing to stop and let us take photos wherever we wanted. The Welcome to Alaska sign is a "must stop at and photo" . Be sure and stamp your passport at Fraser BC - just for fun.
