Marla, Google "Ballard + lodging" and you will get several suggestions. Ballard is not close to downtown or to the University District, but there are frequent buses between downtown and Ballard and between downtown and the U District. Service between Ballard and the U District is not as convenient, although it exists.

Marla, I realize that you are interested in sampling the wonderful oysters at Walrus and the Carpenter, but I do not recommend that you stay in Ballard. Stay either near the U District or downtown. You'd find it much more convenient, and you could take the #17 bus to Ballard for dinner.

good to hear these suggestions. we will have a car so we can drive to the neighborhood and then to a hotel. I thought it sounded like a cute area to explore for a morning before we hit the highway.
