Killing layover time in Seattle

We will have a long layover in Seattle -- almost 8 hours -- and are thinking of renting a car (have to store luggage) and going out around the town with 3 tweens. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

won't your luggage be checked thru? If not you can leave it down in baggage claim at Kens Storage. I think its near carousel 10. Why not just take lt rail into downtown and visit the Pike Place Mkt or ride the monorail to the space needle. Seattle can get really long check in lines for security so don't spend too much time before coming back in. I think this would make more sense than dealing with a rental, parking, and buying gas and returning it and taking a shuttle back to the airport.

In your rental car you could easily come into downtown. It's less than 1/2 hour drive from the airport. The highlights most people enjoy in a short time include: the Pike Place Market, the Waterfront, and Pioneer Square historic district. Walking around these 3 areas and having a meal somewhere would fill the 4-5 hours you'd have free.

@ davidmg: 2 different airlines/itineraries. Thanks for info on storage at airport. Only really getting car because of storage. @Suze2you: Thanks for the suggestions; will look into some of them. @charlesA: Not killer, but trying to do something besides sit in airport for 8 hours yet not try to rush something that needs more time. Rest assured we are coming back through Seattle on other end of travel and staying longer...

Agree with David that renting a car will be more hassle and time-consuming than it's worth - you can do light rail or consider a taxi (for 5 people, cost difference is smaller and the time savings may be worthwhile, unless it's rush hour).

Realistically, you're going to have about 4 hours in town (will take you almost an hour to deplane, store luggage, and get to the rail or taxi, then 30-60 min. into the city depending on mode of travel and time of day, and I would be heading back to the airport at least 2+ hrs before departure time).

Since you're coming back to Seattle, I'd suggest picking one of the areas Suze suggests, combined with a relaxed lunch. On the waterfront, you can visit the aquarium and ride the new ferris wheel. Another idea is to take the monorail from Westlake Center to the Seattle Center where you can go up the Space Needle, explore the grounds, perhaps see EMP or SciFi museum (although you may want to save this for when you have more time).
