Mt. Ranier June Camping

I plan to camp June 30-July 4 at Mt. Ranier. I have reserved a site a Cougar Rock and Ohanapecosh. I am tent camping, so I am worried about the overnight temperatures. Wondering wether I should book a hotel instead? Camping with 7 and 9 year olds.

What are your concerns? You will be high enough that it will be cool at night. Of course we can not predict rain. We have had some nice weather this Spring, but you are coming at a time that is just on the cusp of Summer some years. Rainier kind of creats its on weather. Best I can tell you is not to worry about snow.

The kids will have a great time. Bring a spare tarp and some cord in case you need a lean-to because of rain.

Ohanepecosh is a "hot spot" at Rainier. Temps there are consistantly warmer than elsewhere in the park; in the summer, sometimes 20 degrees warmer. If you're really worried, spend all your time there. That said, it will still be cool and night and it could rain.

Coming from LA, I guess you don't know about Pacific NW blue tarp camping. One of the local insurance companies has a great TV ad about it. When you tent camp in the Pacific NW, you take a big blue tarp and tie it off between the trees so that your picnic table is protected from the rain.

Your kids will have a great time. We started taking ours camping before they could walk. They have kids and grandchildren of their own now and still love camping and hiking.

Just be sure to bring raingear and some games.
