July/August 2014

We are recently retired and planning a trip to Alaska. We will stay in Anchorage with friends for a few days, one night with friends near Coopers Landing, will probably go to Homer for a few nights, and will eventually cruise out of Whittier or Seward to Vancouver BC or Seattle. It has been suggested we take a boat trip to see the fjords/glaciers/wildlife from Seward, possibly take a train ride from Seward to Anchorage but are hearing a lot of mixed reviews on the train ride. We have 7-8 days to spend in the end of July or early August in AK before getting on a cruise ship, just trying to decide what are "must do" activities. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Really? Mixed reviews about the Anch-Seward train? It's often referred to as the most scenic leg of the railroad, and i agree. I wouldnt hesitate at all.

Mixed reviews are probably from those who would advise to rent a car and not be limited by the train. You would be unable to get out and take photos as you wish along one of the more scenic roads in Alaska. Plus, there are several points of interest between Anchorage & Seward that folks miss out on because they're on the train.

I would recommend driving it 99 out of 100 times!

As for "must do" . . . if you provide us with some of your interests, that would help. That said, generally speaking I always suggest Denali Nat'l Park for the picturesque views and potential for wildlife. Plan to allocate at least three days and two nights, however.

If you cruise down from Whittier or Seward your destination will be Vancouver and not Seattle. From Cooper Landing to Homer, the drive is about 125 miles and an easy drive.

Now versus Sterling Highway driving and the train to Seward. On the train you cannot stop along the way and there is a section (Portage to Moose Pass) that is not reached by road. It also passes Spencer Glacier. In fact, they even have a special train for that where you can get off at Spencer, or just to Grandview and return. Instead of travelling out of Anchorage, you could drive to Portage and take the train to Spencer (or Glacier) and return to Portage. Then get your car and continue to Cooper Landing.

Thanks for all the input! We have decided that Fairbanks and Denali will have to be another trip, we will stay in Anchorage for a few days with friends and take the train to Seward and then the Fjords cruise there before going to Whittier to board the cruise. Looking forward to it!
