Rent a car/SUV in Alaska

Hi , we are going to visit Alaska - Anchorage -Denali NP - Seward and back to Anchorage in August, was wandering what is the best deal, SUV ? Also what I've found major companies are allowing driving on paved roads only, is there are gravel roads on the way to and around Denali NP and how to get around? Advice and help appreciated, darko, sydney

The best deal is whatever you can find at this relatively late date. There is no set company or "deal" out there to be had.

Yes, most of the major companies will not allow driving on gravel roads. Driving "inside" Denali National Park is not possible except for during the very limited "road lottery weekend" in September. There are paved roads to it, and inside you'll have to take the park's shuttle bus system, so that should not be a concern for you.

Darko, look at traveljigsaw.com.au for your rental. They are a broker but the actual rental will be a major company. Still with the no paved road clause but, as noted above, not an issue for your plan. We've used TJS many times in the USA including a couple of times in Anchorage and once in Fairbanks.

Most of the highways in Alaska are paved - including the one TO Denali National Park. There are a few unpaved highways, including the Denali Highway, but that highway doesn't go to Denali national park - the George Parks hwy is the one you will be driving to get there from the Anchorage area. You can drive the first 15 miles on the Denali Park road, which are paved. Rent the car that fits your party & luggage - no need for an SUV, unless you just prefer to drive on. :)
