Berkshire and a week in town 2014.

Hi all,

Yep flying in on 29th April for a week.

Booked at the Travelinn out of town.

Booked hire car.

What to do and see for a week outside of Berkshire meeting?

Get in 2030hrs so how is the drive to Travelinn out west?

Will have GPS.

Where can I go for a bite to eat that time of night?

What is parking around town like during the day?

Parking recommendations?

Do I park outside CBD and get the bus into town?

Is it 20 degrees and raining?

Must checkout what secret, local stores?

Any sales or coupons, websites or free clubs to join online?

Have a Safeway card.

Hmm, It would help to know what interests you and if you are travelling with people, etc. in order to recommend things to do. I'm sure you're aware of the great sales that Berkshire puts on at Borsheim's and the Nebraska Furniture Mart, so you could definitely check those out. I know hotel space fills up and can get pricey, but if I were you I'd check into upgrading my hotel. If it is the Travel Inn at 10807 M, it's a former Motel 6, so it is on the low end of the budget hotel range. There is a Village Inn Pancake House next door which might be an option for a few meals. As for driving, at 8 pm you won't have much traffic to contend with on the interstate. Omaha is a driving town, and I think you'll find parking readily available, and free except for the garages downtown. They'll be much cheaper than anything you'd experience in New York. So, I wouldn't worry about the bus. Can't guarantee anything about the weather. It should be in the 70's but you never know.

I'm alone and Australian(profile will not update?)

Do you have any example of the great sales?

Food(that are good without the Warren dines here sales pitch) , parking close to the Arena(how, when, where, cost, length) general parking tips around town, basically appreciate any words of wisdom from a local!

As long as I get a bed(hopefully without smoke in room) and a wifi connection I'm happy.

My last airport Motel 6 Chicago experience was the worst motel I have ever stayed in....they gave me air freshener when I complained about the stale smoke smell in room and the ashtray that had been turned upside down!....complaints in writing got the brush off....you wont be staying with us again so we don't care!

Regards

Hi again - here's a link to the Berkshire visitor guide which outlines the events, parking, shuttles and places to visit in Omaha. During the week you'll be fine with driving and parking, but the shuttles might be a good idea for official events at the Century Link since you aren't familiar with Omaha and don't want to waste time fighting the traffic for a parking spot (although $8 for surface parking is reasonable. I know I have family members that come to the meeting just for the discounted shopping, both at Borsheim's and the Furniture Mart, but especially the vendors down at the Century Link. For activities, Omaha does have a world class zoo, and I have been to the Durham to see the 1968 exhibit and highly recommend it. If you're an art person, check out Joslyn, admission is free as well as parking. If you're downtown, the Old Market area has lots of restaurants and bars.

Here is a hotel that is budget priced and more central to Berkshire activities and dining. Hawthorn Suites Old Mill is tucked into a suburban business park located very close to Borsheim's and the shuttle from either the Sheraton or Westroads shopping mall. West Dodge Road is the main East/West artery through Omaha and also just off the interstate. It is an extended stay hotel, so it has a kitchenette. Look at the reviews and see what you think. I haven't stayed there, but I think it's a good location and has better amenities than the Travel Inn.

You might be interested in a couple of attractions just across the Missouri River in Council Bluffs, Iowa; the free Union Pacific Railway Museum or the adjacent Squirrel Cage Jail & Museum ($7). I hate to mention that Council Bluffs also has casinos, since I don't approve.

I see that Warren Buffet already recommended the Strategic Air & Space Museum ($12) and Storm Chasers minor league baseball game.

I agree with Suzi-Q that the Henry Doorly Zoo is a top notch attraction: tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g60885-d20…
