Travel to Palermo

Will be staying in Castellammare del Golfo in July and one of our trips planned is to go to Palermo, but I dont want to drive there.

What are the best options using public transport, either train or bus.

Thanks

Welcome to Sicily sombom!

Russo runs direct bus service from Castellammare del Golfo to Palermo.

However, if you have hired a car, you might consider parking at Palermo’s airport when visiting Palermo.

www.gesap.it/index.php…

Then take the frequent and reliable Prestia e Comandè bus service from the airport to Palermo.

Click on “Aereoporto Falcone Borsellino – Palermo”:

The Prestia e Comandè service from the airport to Palermo runs later than other public transport from Palermo to any surrounding town. You could then enjoy a very long day in Palermo, including dinner, which is generally considered late in Sicily by tourist’s standards, just beginning around 20.00. Then take the bus back to the airport, collect your car, and drive onward to your hotel.

What are restaurant, store and museum hours like?:

Thanks Vagabonda, parking at the airport sounds like a good idea.

I have another question if you dont mind:

We will be flying into Catania and driving to Castellammare on the A19 and staying there for one week.

For our second week we will be staying in Taormina and was going to use the A20/A18 route to see more of the country.

Would this add a lot of driving time to our journey?

Thanks again

Prego sombom,

It’s about a 3-hour drive from Catania Fontanarossa to Castellammare del Golfo.

There’s essentially no difference in driving time between the A19 or the A20 route from Castellammare del Golfo to Taormina, almost 4 hours depending on traffic.

The northern coastal route could "potentially" have some detours because of tunnel conditions.

Messina Palermo SS113:

Check driving routes on ViaMichelin.

http://www.viamichelin.com/

A19:

Costs

38.78 EUR

Toll 1.70 EUR | Petrol 37.08 EUR

Time

03h52 with 03h07 on motorways

Distance

326 km with 306 km on motorways

A20:

Costs

50.73 EUR

Toll 13.20 EUR | Petrol 37.53 EUR

Time

03h54 with 03h09 on motorways

Distance

336 km with 316 km on motorways

Are the detours notified in advance, is there a website I could check before I leave for up to date information?

Ciao sombom,

Yes the detours are posted (although not always far in advance for recent occurrences), and you can also consult the Anas website.

Click on your intended road on the drop-down menu under “Selezionare una strada”. Then click on "Vai".

Hello Vagabonda

Yes that link is easy enough to follow, nothing reported on the A20 northern route today, hopefully it will be the same when we are there.

Thanks again for your advice and also for all the other information you have posted on this forum, it has been a great help to us planning our first trip to Sicily.

Regards

Prego sombom – My pleasure!

Hopefully all the issues with the tunnels have been rectified!

This thread discusses stops along the northern route – Tindari is especially nice.
