Hi Trevor

Really just euros - tobacco products are cheaper than UK, cigars much cheaper, probably about 1/4 cost in UK. Don't know about fags or rolling tobacco.

I'm sure exchanging sterling out there and at a good rate is widely possible. I just get euros from the ATMs. Plenty of HSBC banks.

Alexanders in Qawra will take sterling and have a large range of cigarettes (as werll as beers , wines and spirits )

The shop is on the road opposite the bus station just before the Santana Hotel.

They are very reliable and honest .

I have no connection except as a satisfied customer.

I should imagine Tourist/Souvenir shops would take Sterling but most probably it wouldn't be a good rate. HSBC has ATMs of course but the ones in Tourist zones also have Foreign Curreny Exchange machines which are useful.

A packet of 20 ciggies cost round about 40 euro cents. (I think). I was told that the prices in shops is the same as that at the Airport. Can anyone confirm this ?

Don't think its 40 Euro Cents, ie 35p!

More like €4 a pack if my memory serves me well!

I think you will find that these shops do give a good exchange rate.

Better than many official exchanges

Confirm that some shops will take sterling.

Tobacco prices confirm (at present lol - increase just rejected in budget) at about 40 euros per outer of 10 (4 euros each). No duty free as such, so prices at airport are the same as local tobacconist (the odd one may be doing a deal). Be aware that duty must be paid (*there is a hologram sticker on the outside), and some have been caught with counterfeit cigs resulting in fines and confiscation. "Duty free" coming in to Malta as well as on departure, so I usually buy coming in whilst waiting for my luggage, stache in my case for return, and then buy locally, topping up when I leave (less to carry).
