Menasses to Gettysburg, Pa

We will be in Menasses in about 2 weeks. We want to check out Gettysburg also. Assuming the traffic will be heavy near DC, what alternate routes would be better? I am leaning toward Hwy 15 but don't have any idea what to expect, we are in our 60's from the west coast.

Yes, Route 15 is your best bet.

And it is Manassas, not Menasses. You probably know that, but it will make a difference when you are looking for directions.

You might want to check out this website that has more info on the area you will be driving through.

I like the free 11 X 17 map. You can either request one in advance or pick it up at a visitor center in Manassas.

They have a lot of suggestions for things to see along the way or side trips.

Have a good trip.

Sorry about the spelling. We have 2 weeks(Sept 26- Oct 10) to see all we can. We fly into Charlotte and get our rental car. Then we are headed to Jamestown and then north to Gettysburg. Not going to DC this trip. Then we plan to see as much of the Blue Ridge Parkway as time allows. We fly out of Charlotte.

In you take US Route 15, you will pass by the National Museum of Civil War Medicine located in the heart of downtown Frederick, Maryland.

Also Antietam Battlefield, and Harpers Ferry, are located slightly to the west -- both of them are national historical parks. Harrisburg, PA also has a national Civil War musem.

US 15 is a pretty good road, 4 lanes, divided for part of the routing. If you're near Thurmont, Maryland close to a meal time, I can recommend the Cozy Country Inn and Restaurant with their small Camp David (presidential retreat) museum.

I love Gettysburg and the trip from Manassas should be an easy one on 15. 15 is a great scenic ride.

re Jamestown

If it's not too cold (and it's still running) the Jamestown Island Explorer Cruise is really neat. The entrance is at the end of the parking lot of the Jamestown Settlement parking lot.

I highly recommend going over to the Yorktown Riverwalk area for lunch or dinner. It's a nice little area they renovated after a hurricane with shops and restaurants. The Riverwalk Restaurant is nice as it is on the water and has nice views.

re Gettysburg

(I may be going in the next couple of weeks. If I do I will post some updated info on my trip.)

I second the Thurmont recommendation. But I like the Shamrock Restaurant myself.

I also LOVED going to Eisenhower's home
