This is a pretty alarmist opinion. I don't think it's very interesting outside of the park, but to say it's dangerous is an overstatement.

Depends on which way you go -- if you exit the west gate of stone mtn park and enter the Dekalb Co side of Stn Mtn, you will be in an urban area, which i wouldnt classify as dangerous as a housing project, but you probably shouldnt be walking the area of Memorial Drive after dark. If you exit the east gate, you will be on the Gwinnett Co side of Stn Mtn, which is mostly a retail/shopping district along Hwy 78, which looks like any other city in america where you find all the chain restaurants and stores. The Evergreen Resort (Mariott) inside the park is nice, but can be expensive.

You will be fine if you stay in any area on the Highway 78 side of Stone Mountain park. It has many hotels, restaurants, durg stores and just about anything else that you would need.
