good places to eat close to aquarium

We will leaving the aquariam around 5:00 on a Thursday night and I thought instead of fighting rush hour traffic to go back to our hotel in Marietta that we would wait it out and have dinner close by, are there any reasonably priced restaurants in the area? we are a family of 7, so we need to watch our budget. Thank you for any suggestions.

I don't think you are going to find a budget priced place to eat downtown. I may be corrected but I don't know of any place. You may need to plan to go back to Cobb Parkway to one of the chain restaurants along there.

Well, you could always head to the Varsity. That's closer to Midtown but there's ample free parking and the food (while greasy) is quite affordable. And it's definitely a unique Atlanta experience.

I am goign to an event tomorrow near the aquarium and put together the following list to send to my friends to see where we wanted to meet up for dinner beforehand. In addition to this list, you're not far from the Real Chow Baby ( make-your-own stir fry place that's fun). Maybe this will help:

There's a French café called Fleur de Lis (actually B--- and I are supposed to be pictured on their website but I don't know the link), the restaurants at CNN/Philips (Don Pablos, McCormick & Schmicks, the Chinese place), Sidebar (sports bar), BED (but it's expensive), Ted's Montana Grill. Then there's the tourist drivel around Peachtree - Hooters, Hard Rock - or Peachtree Center for Mama Ninfa's, Azio, Ray's. None of these jump out at me but several would make do.

Here are some better ideas that those I just listed (although the Real Chow Baby is fun):

If you're driving, why don't you drive a little north - just follow Peachtree - into midtown, where there are tons of options. The Varsity is certainly a classic, and the Vortex has amazing burgers. Also, if you follow Marietta street from the aquarium it becomes Howell Mill Road. At Howell Mill's intersection with 14th street, there's a great inexpensive taco joint ($1.95 a taco!)- Tacqueria del Sol. After eating there you can just continue north on Howell Mill until you reach I-75 which takes you to Marietta.

Leave it to JAtlanta to remember what's one of the best deals in town, Taqueria Del Sol. They serve more than the average taco. Their brisket taco is amazing. And their shrimp corn chowder is my favorite. Not to mention affordable.

One word of advice about the Taq, however. You get in line, place your order, pay and go sit down. In that order. You cannot grab a table while someone else orders for the group. The sign above the register explains this but it helps to know this in advance because the manager is very strict about it.

This may seem strange but it really works to the customer's advantage.

I am a tacq-a-holic! I alternate between the Memphis (bbq and coleslaw), fish (with jalapeno tartar sauce) and dried chicken tacos. Love the enchilada ($2.99) with green sauce. Killer cheese dip and shrimp corn chowder. Indifferent about the guac - I've had better.

JAtlanta

Is the Real Chow Baby close enough to walk from the aquarium? About how much would a meal be per person? It sounds like an place we might like to try when we finally do go to the aquarium.

It's not within walking distance. If you drive west on Marietta St., it turns into Howell Mill and runs northwest. The Real Chowbaby is on the left, probably 2-3 miles from the aquarium, in the bottom floor of a loft building. The stir fry bar is all-you-can-eat and I think I remember it being $11 or $12 a person for dinner. It's less for lunch and less for children. You can make multiple trips to try out differenct combinations and sauces.

JAtlanta, if you are a guacamole fan, you might want to go over to atlantacuisine.com and follow the thread about that new Mexican place at Atlantic Station. There are so many different opinions about the guac there, I can't even follow it any more.
