Driving from Atlanta to Plains

Our family of four will be traveling from ATL to Plains in June. Google maps gives us 3 options for the drive: through Columbus; south on 41; or south on 19. Are any of those options better than the others, or does it really matter? Not in a hurry, just looking for an interesting drive. Also, hoping to spend the first night an hour or two out of Atlanta on the way. Any recommendations for a nice town to bunk down?

41 is out of the way IMO. I've done that drive on 19, which I find pleasant. A stop along that way would be Griffin, but I don't know about hotels there.

Two ideas -

1) if you are interested in driving most of the route on the first day, go to Americus and spend the night in the Windsor hotel

http://windsor-americus.com/

They have a VERY nice restaurant -

2) If you don't want to drive that far, then go 85 to Callaway Gardens

http://www.callawaygardens.com/

You should have time to explore a little bit at Callaway if only the butterfly garden

There are several places to stay but I like the new lodge the best

I'm not sure why you're headed to Plains, but if it has to do with President Carter, you may also be interested in FDR's Little White House (where he died)

If you are interested in Civil War history, you may be interested in Andersonville -

If you want to ride a train -

And back to President Carter - if you are at all interested, he teaches Sunday School almost every Sunday at Maranatha Baptist Church and I've really enjoyed listening to him. There's a family owned restaurant in town that serves great fried chicken and home southern cooking

Another good restaurant serving home cooking in the general area is the Mennonite restaurant in Montezuma GA -

And one last idea for the general area - Providence Canyon State Park

There's a lot to do in that corner of Georgia, probably more than you have time to do.
