Airport to Emory University

Daughter will move to Atlanta in August to begin grad studies at Emory. We're looking for the cheapest option to get her from Portland OR to her apartment near campus with two suitcases, a carry-on and a handbag in tow. She's never been to Atlanta and doesn't know a soul there. She is an experienced traveler and is quite comfortable with public transit but there is a limit to how much one small human can juggle.

Is her best bet to take Marta from the airport part way then catch a cab? If so, where? Will there be cabs queued up by the station? Estimated cab cost from station to campus? How much time should she allow?

Or is there a reliable airport shuttle service that serves the Emory community and surrounding neighborhood that might be worth a few extra bucks?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide.

The nearest MARTA station is Inman Park, but don't count on any taxis there. You may want to consider Uber, which should cost no more than a cab, since she will have some "stuff". There are shuttles, but I don't have details; some other DE here can fill you in.

Will she not have her own transport while she's here?

Thanks. What is Uber? A MARTA station?

She will be entirely dependent on Emory's shuttles and public transit for the next couple of years -- might get a bicycle if it seems like a feasible option.

It would really help if we had a better idea of where the apartment is located. "Near campus" is a little vague, and could legitimately include neighborhoods that are a few miles away (that are not well served by MARTA).

MARTA buses go directly to and by the campus (and Emory also has its own transportation system), but they may not be convenient for her apartment. If you can tell us what apartment complex it is (or give us a nearby intersection) then that would be a big help.

Uber is a car hire service somewhat like a taxi - Google it.

And, JimG has a good point.

Public transit would be a hassle with so much luggage. If she were taking this trip frequently I could understand choosing the cheapest option. But for a one time trip to a new home in a new city, this really isn't a time to cheap out. I'd use a taxi or Uber. At a minimum use a shared ride shuttle. You'll find a list on the airport website.

If she wants to r are public transportation, she can take the Marta train out of the airport to the midtown station and change to the 36 bus (north Decatur) that will take her over to Emory on N Decatur Rd. Probably 60-75 min ride all told.

Agree with J, first trip to strange town she should use a taxi or car service of some kind. Once she gets moved in, she can explore how public transit works.
