Begur or Pals

Hello

We are planning a holiday with our 7 year old in July. Begur sounds lovely but we are finding it difficult to find an apartment we like (a small complex with a shared pool and outdoor dining space). Can anyone help with a bit of information about Pals, or maybe suggest another area nearby? We want somewhere with near shops and restaurants but not somewhere very busy. This will be our first trip to this area ! Thanks for any advice.

Pals has three parts - the historic old village which is on top of a small hill which is about 4km from the beach, then Masos de Pals/Mas Tomasi which is 1km closer to the beach, and then by the sea, Platja de Pals (Playa de Pals in brochures that insist on using Spanish) which is an area of holiday villas and golf courses and seasonal shops, bars and restaurants including supermarkets in amongst the pine trees right next to the beach.

Platja de Pals to Begur's Sa Riera is about 1km around the coast with a walk over the cliffs, or a fiddlier connection via road. In summer Platja de Pals has a set of amusements on the beach for children - like high-wire trampolines. To the right side, are rocky areas for exploring, scrambling and jumping into the sea. To the left, the beach extends for a few kilometres with nature reserves and driftwood at the far end by the mouth of the Ter. The area is flatter than around Begur, though there is still a gentle incline leaving the beach.

I agree saul. I think it's easier to find an apartment near the sea in Platja de pals than in Begur. Begur's coves (sa riera, aiguablava, sa tuna) are very lovely but not very large. But these cove's are not very far from platja de Pals. It's a marvelous area for holidays.

Can you please elaborate on the attractions of Pals? We are an Australian couple travelling from southern France to Barcelona by train in early July. We would like to stop off en route for three nights, somewhere with a mixture of historic sites and scenery, near or on the coast. Can we get to Pals from Girona by public transport or do we need to hire a car? We are also interested in doing some walking.

Thanks

Depends what you want to do when you get to the coast? Pals Begur , Llafranc , Calella de Palafrugell would all be good bases, you could get there by bus or taxi from Girona and there are good coastal path walks. If you want to travel to the medieval villages though I'd advise to hire a car. There are car hire places near Girona station. The challenge will be to find somewhere suitable that isn't already booked up

Sarfa (www.sarfa.es) has bus timetables either from Barcelona or a train connection at Flaça, but you might need to get a taxi from the old part of town to Platja de Pals at the beach. If you're interested in walking we have a walking blog which includes several walks around Pals (www.costabravaliving.net). If you're here for a few days only, an alternative to a car might be to hire bikes for the day.

Whichever you choose, if you can hire a car, do so, so many wonderful coves and beaches in the area and if you've a seven year old with you it'll be much easier than using public transport to explore them! You could visit a different one every day easily.

We're going back in 55 days, not that we're counting or anything.
