Black Hills Weather

With our Black hills area trip coming up for this Friday, May 23 thru May 26th...Am a tad worried about the driving conditions.

Being a west coast city slicker..we have zero experience with what is being described as Scattered and isolated thunderstorms with chances of rain. Can anyone clue me in to what to expect?

As a side note...do the critters down in Custer Park stay out of the open when there are storms?

Thanks again

Scattered & isolated indicate storms pass fairly quickly. If visibility becomes a problem, find a place to pull off the road.

I've seen both buffalo & the burros at the side of the wildlife loop in the rain.

May and June in western South Dakota are noted for having scattered and isolated T-storms most any day, and unless your vehicle has worn tires, you should have no problem. As Lorhs states, if you feel uncomfortable, simply find a safe place to pull-over and wait until the conditions improve.

Having worked in Custer State Park in past years, I noticed that wildlife seemed to "enjoy" the rain and were not afraid of grazing on the prairie during inclement weather. Of course, lightning usually caused the prairie to become void of wildlife ... along with massive rain and strong winds. Nonetheless, if you catch the Wildlife Loop Road in the late afternoon or early evening right after a rain storm ... roll the windows down and savor the smells of fresh air, prairie fragrances, etc. If you truly are a "city slicker," you will love the aroma of the open meadows of Great Plains.

Hope this helps,

We have been in the Black Hills since Sunday riding the trails on our ATV. Only today did the weather make us run for camp. That being said it is cloudy with light rain right over us but blue to the north so obviously isolated. Enjoy, we have!
